Best Voltag/Amperage and Electrolyte's to Use For Electrochemical Etching

I did some searching around on the forum and couldn't find my question answered. What would make the best easily available etching electrolyte for both copper and steel? Is copper (II) sulphate the best option for copper? And Ferrous Sulfate Heptahydrate for iron? And the other question is what is the best voltage and amperage to use to get the cleanest most crisp etch on a knife? I know DC is for etching and AC for marking but should I use the same voltage and current for both? I'm thinking of getting a doorbell transformer and soldering that together for the AC etcher instead of spending ~ $275CAD on a personalizer plus or etchomatic. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks
