Best way to store kitchen knives??

I've heard the blocks aren't that great for the knives so I bought a magnet but I don't like the steel on steel. My Hattori's cringe every time I place them on there. Any other ideas? I was thinking about a rubber coating of some sort on the magnet so it isn't so harsh. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Joe

Even Hattori Hanzo uses the magnet to store his kitchen knives...

ehehhehe...

you could put something on the magnet, like a cloth strip or rubber, to keep the metal on metal contact from happenning! Or, get a block that stores the blades horizontally. Or, if you have a vertical storage block, store the knives edge up. You want to avoid edge down because when you draw the knife you can cut the wood. Not much of a big deal to the block, but you can dull fine edges on knives such as Hattori blades! Check around, usually you can find horizontal storage blocks for low prices.

I've got one of those knife-block drawers--it has about a dozen slots in it for storing kitchen knives. I store the knives blade side up. The block is thick enough that all of the blades are covered, except the largest chef's knife. Works well because they don't scratch, ding or dull.

The proper way to store a Hattori is with a wooden Saya sheath, and then putting that into a custom fitted box.

On the low end, I glued a thin layer of felt over the metal contacts of the magnetic bar for my wood turning tools. Should work well to prevent scratches. What I don't like about the magnetic bars for my Japanese cooking knives is that the edge gets nicked every now and then when I'm not careful about putting it back properly. Gives me a great excuse to bring it back to the store and watch the knife polisher do his craft.

The classic wooden block is fine as long as you don't put the knife away wet.

I refer to mine as, "The Burglar Courtesy Center."

One of the wooden blocks that is on an angle is best and when you put the knife away always do so with the edge on the up. That way the edge does not come in contact with the wood.

I like the scene in "Kill Bill" where the swordmaker in Okinawa casually tosses his kitchen knife at the magnets on the wall after use.

Well I've decided on a magnet for my storage but I am in the process of coating it in a product called plasti dip. They use it for the handles of pliers etc. It's just like rubber. This should be easy on the finish of my Hattori's. Also when I remove them, I'll twist the knife so the spine rests on the magnet then pull it off. Sound OK?

Best way to store kitchen knives?
Easy. Just hang them up by the hole in the blade.

Here's what I settled on. A rubber coated magnet :)
It works great and keep the mother in laws mitts off my knives :D

Those are the cheapo line of Hattori's. Cheapo meaning they don't cost $1250 like the damascus knives made of CowryX :)
