which muliti tool is more rust resistant, in general, the Swiss Army tools or Leathermans? Since I live in Hawaii my bugout bag will be used for either hurricane or tsunami event and I'm looking for a muli-tool to bug out with. currently have the leatherman juice s2. I was thinking to upgrade to a medium size tool a Swiss Army Sprint or Leatherman Rebar or Wingman.

the Swiss Tool (silver/shiny one) is very resistant, used mine on boats, while skiing and similar, no problems in like 3 years
the black version instead had some superficial rust on the black coat, removed with some tissue, won't even call it rust but rusty powder
the spirit looks as good as new too

on the other hand the black LM CORE had some good rust, no dust, real rust on many tools so for me and I can remember some rusty pics of the wave on EDCF
oh I live in Venice so here it's salty and humid

for me the VICs are more rust proof than the LMs, never seen rust on any SAK

My Wave had a few specs of rust on some of the tools. It came off pretty easy tho. I never had rust on a SAK.

I've had a little rust on the file of my Swisstool, not on any of the other blades. The blades of my Leathermans would sometime get a dark spot, but never red rust. YMMV

In my experience Victorinox multitools are much more rust resistant than Leatherman multitools. The only time I had a few spots on one of my multitools was on a Leatherman Wave that I carried during 4 week trekking along the coast, but it was easy to remove.

I haven't had either of them rust, and I don't take any precautions at all with either of them.

If they DO rust, the Victorinox tools will be easier to remove the rust from, due to their high polish. It would chip right off.

I lost my original leatherman pst getting firewood in the winter. Found it around spring. Just a little peppering. Outside in snow and rain. I can't comment on saks. Never lost one outside.

General consensus is that Victorinox steel has a better rust resistance, however, is a bit on the softer side.

Last year, I spent a couple weeks on a kayaking trip, I carried both a Leatherman and a SAK inside the pockets of my PFD. By the end of the trip the blade on my Leatherman had developed little rust spots while the Victorinox was good as new.

SAK all the way. I used to carry one in my swim trunks. Countless times in salt water, never a spec of rust. As far as I'm concerned they are rust proof.

I've had the same conclusion as everyone else. The Leatherman will rust a little bit, the swiss not at all. On a salty beach carving up fresh fruit, my Leatherman rusted just a tiny bit on the blade, while the SAK did not. I don't think it's anywhere serious enough to be a problem, I just wipe off the Leatherman more frequently.

I own two LM tools. The Blast and the Skelletool. And one Vic SwissTool (the heavy one)

On both LM tools I´ve already seen some rust spots. I didn´t use it in wet enviroment or whatever, carried it in my rucksack.

The Vic ST was on my belt during building lot and lumber work. Even on rainy days and whatever. Nothing with rust.

My recommendation: Get a Vic

Kind regards
