Beware of Microtech Knives

I purchased a brand new Microtech LUDT from Not Your Mamas Knives about a year ago. Upon receiving the knife, I was at first very happy with my purchase; however, by just opening the auto
knife a few times, I discovered that the tip had broken off from merely opening the damn knife. After contacting both Not Your Mamas Knives and Microtech several times, Microtech finally agreed to repair or replace the blade.

I sent it in January of 2010 expecting to receive it 2-3 months later (as directed from Microtech). Unfortunately, after the time lapsed, I called and emailed Microtech about the
progress of my knife many times never hearing a thing about my LUDT. After six months of no news I finally sent my complaint to the BBB; however, the BBB was also shunned by Microtech, so in
the end, they couldn't do anything.

Least to say, I will never buy a Microtech product again. What good is it if you can't trust them for repair. Moreover, there products are extremely overpriced and their customer service is one of the worst I have ever encountered.

Lastly, if their products are of the highest quality, how in the world did the tip of my blade brake so easily from just opening it? My advice, buy from a reputable company that will actually fix and
then return your product (especially sooner than 2-3 months if ever).

Head over to the auto forum and get in touch with gte217e or the owner of hollow grind. He is a dealer for microtech and seems to know how to navigate the maze that is microtech warranty. He's offered to help others. I'm sure he'd help you as well, if you ask nicely and promise to buy something from him.:) kidding, but he left a kind of standing offer to help with microtech warranty issues on the auto forum. Worth the call or email.

sounds like they still have your knife after all this time..Do they still have it with no way for you to get it back ?

I've had over 30 mirotechs in the last 10 years and never any issues. All work today just as they did new. They can be a little quirky sometimes with communication. I don't see a tip just breaking from opening - something would have to be done to the knife as suggested above. Did they mention anything about auto knife laws - sometimes you may have to send back thru a dealer or prove you are police or military? Hope it works out for you. Too bad if their customer service is getting that bad - as they do make awesome knives.

That would be very plausible (dropping the knife and breaking it myself); however, it didn't happen. I would easily admit culpa if I dropped it, but I didn't. This was a brand new knife, I never even used or carried the knife. The force of opening the knife is great; hence, I can only assume it broke from opening and closing it many times. I even asked my wife if she had used or dropped the knife and accidently broke the tip off...she never had seen the knife.

At any rate, for Microtech to never returning my knife plain out sucks. The knife was expensive. You would be pissed too if this happened to you.

if you are not an active duty soldier or leo, i heard they will keep any auto knife and not return it.

It's widely known Microtech's customer service SUCKS. :D Has been that way for yearssssssssssss. It isn't uncommon, depending on what needs to be accomplished to the knife, for months to pass before the knife is repaired. Definitely DO NOT expect much response or action to calls or emails.

I've had more than my fair share of Microtech's. Great knives when they work. My heartburn is when they don't work and require work. One better, what Microtech does when they can't fix it. I have one falling into the latter. Several trips back through the Microtech repair process and I'm still setting on a $500+, broke ass Microtech. It's a limited run knife with a "known" problem, so it was understandable it couldn't be replaced. Refunding my money? LMAO. . .it was like watching cockroaches scatter when the lights are turned on.

Sold all of my Microtech, but a hand full.

If it has anything to do with Tony M., you couldn't give me one!

It's shipped to a dealer, who then ships it to the owner.

Trying to return a microtech is like trying to return a bag of fake crack purchased from some dirtbag, aint gonna happen.

You'd think with all the competition for our money out there, MT would be very concerned about a bad rep for customer service.

Bill

Tony M. care about customer service???

trying to return an MT for repair is twice as hard as trying to return a Strider.

Both only care about making the sale, good customer service is far too expensive!!!

I'm not one for autos anyways, but after all I've heard I would rather (( no class )) than buy from those kinds of companies.

Sorry, i will keep it clean in the future.

I had a return with MT 6 years ago. Very difficult. Buying that knife was still a better choice than (( no class ))....WTF.....

I just wanted to chime in here and let everyone know whats going on.

I have been in touch with the original author of this thread. I have spoken to several people at Microtech trying to research and find the knife. Tony isn't the only one at the company and I can assure you that everyone I've spoken to at Microtech have been extremely helpful and concerned. Since the facility has moved from North Carolina to Bradford PA they needed more time to go over records that may have shifted. I was told I will have an update by next week. I will be sure to come back here and give a status update as soon as I get one.

Also, for what it's worth, I have sent back many knives to Microtech (22 so far) and all but one was fixed and for the one they didn't fix they gave me a credit.

Wow, I just assumed one of the reasons they were so expensive was the cost of protecting their good name, by providing great warranty service. Business must be good if they can afford to neglect customer service.:thumbdn: (scratching microtech off my wish list:D)

mwhich50, if you purchase from a reputable authorized dealer you remove 99% of the risk of buying a Microtech.
Furthermore, our company is in the process of becoming a Certified Microtech Repair Center; so that if problems do arise with Microtech knives, you will soon be dealing with us and not directly with Microtech.
