Well, I promised to do a review for the Big Brother I won for the cooking contest a little while back. I got it in the mail yesterday, so here we go! Woo!

Before I got it, I was worried the sheath would be too bulky, especially seeing as I'm short (5' even) and it's a big knife. It still goes about down to my kneecaps, but it didn't feel too floppy (might have to eventually modify it into some kind of back sheath though)

And compared it to Widerstand's BK9, which is the closest thing I've got to compare with..

The smaller handle of the big brother definitely fits my hand better, and I like the feel of the kraton. I also like that the swedge isn't as sharp-- it won't tear up whatever I'm using as a baton as much when I'm processing wood.

Other impressions:
*the serrations look like they'd be relatively easy to sharpen, compared to the serrated edges on other knives i've used
*It's not as forward heavy as the BK9, but it's a great chopper if you use a pinky grip (this would be less pronounced for people with larger hands than me :P )
*It's not as heavy, period, as the BK9.
*The choil isn't indented, but there's enough of an unsharpened part of the blade so that you can choke up on the handle past the guard for more control, which is nice.
*It's awesome at cutting back blackberry brambles
*The grind is exceptionally straight and even
*I know some people aren't fan of leather sheaths because of the moisture issue, but once it breaks in a bit I intend to coat the knife liberally with mineral oil so it gets on the inside of the sheath-- voila, self-oiling knife.

To be completely honest I'm not much of a combat knife kinda gal, I don't know all that much about what makes a good tactical knife, but of course it's supposed to be dual-purpose, and I can comment on the utility side of things. Especially considering the design balances both of those aspects, and manages to do so with no glaring trade-offs that I've been able to notice, I'm quite happy with it.

(and before anyone asks, no, I'm not 16, I'm 25! Yeah, I know you were wondering.)

As I get more chances to go out and use it, I'll post further impressions here. :)

looks really nice I was eyeing one with leather washed disc handles on tomars but the thing that blew me off was the thickness of the blade (its .165" i believe which is less than 3/16) and those serrations on the spine. Well I may be biased however because I look for knives to be more of a hack and baton tool rather than utility/combat. But Im very sure the big brother excels in what it does. great review!

Good review!

It's kind of a fun knife for me to just handle, reminds me of my old USMC Kabar that I had as a kid... I need to get another one sometime!

I would just like to added that having chopped with both the Big Brother and the BK9, the BK9 wins in the chopping task. I also like the ergonomics of the Becker handle better since I have big hands. The Kraton handle is nice has a much more 'warm' feel then the Grivory that comes with Becker's, kind of makes me wonder about the possibility of having solid Kraton handles made for the Becker line.

Also just for the record I think the leather stacked handled one should come with a matching brown leather sheath and not a black one.

Outstanding review and pics! Thanks for posting up!

If I had this knife, I might grind myself a choil near the guard for doing the close-up work you show. Might. Would have to handle it to see.

I agree. The testosterone level on most of BFC can be stifling. Captain and mingo are a breath of fresh air.

Cool review - nice work! As to your being "not much of a combat knife kinda gal" - hah! You look like you were born to kick butt with that thing. :D

Nice review and grats on the contest win. I myself and not a fan of 'double edged' blades. I saw you say you used it to cut the brambles, d'ya think it'd be useful for anything else? My paranoia/respect for things that are sharp (and mine are) makes me kinda want some dull back there for utility work. I know my BK-2 that I've had for all of 2 weeks has been a light hammer and pry bar, tasks I'd be afraid of doing with a sharpened back. But, here's yer chance to make me see another point of view :-P

Excellent review! I'm diggin' the ponytail. And I would love to see some more wild edibles threads.
Thank you

Haven't found any other reviews online on the "Big Brother", so this one came at a good time. I've been contemplating getting a partially serrated knife and this setup seems real useful.

All I can say is:

1. Thanks for the impressions and action shots
2. We need knife chicks, knife chick reviews and chicks cutting stuff up a lot more here on BF!

kill those trees! kill kill kill! careful, some brazilian bbq might happen
