Well, I promised to do a review for the Big Brother I won for the cooking contest a little while back. I got it in the mail yesterday, so here we go! Woo!
Before I got it, I was worried the sheath would be too bulky, especially seeing as I'm short (5' even) and it's a big knife. It still goes about down to my kneecaps, but it didn't feel too floppy (might have to eventually modify it into some kind of back sheath though)
And compared it to Widerstand's BK9, which is the closest thing I've got to compare with..
The smaller handle of the big brother definitely fits my hand better, and I like the feel of the kraton. I also like that the swedge isn't as sharp-- it won't tear up whatever I'm using as a baton as much when I'm processing wood.
Other impressions:
*the serrations look like they'd be relatively easy to sharpen, compared to the serrated edges on other knives i've used
*It's not as forward heavy as the BK9, but it's a great chopper if you use a pinky grip (this would be less pronounced for people with larger hands than me
)
*It's not as heavy, period, as the BK9.
*The choil isn't indented, but there's enough of an unsharpened part of the blade so that you can choke up on the handle past the guard for more control, which is nice.
*It's awesome at cutting back blackberry brambles
*The grind is exceptionally straight and even
*I know some people aren't fan of leather sheaths because of the moisture issue, but once it breaks in a bit I intend to coat the knife liberally with mineral oil so it gets on the inside of the sheath-- voila, self-oiling knife.
To be completely honest I'm not much of a combat knife kinda gal, I don't know all that much about what makes a good tactical knife, but of course it's supposed to be dual-purpose, and I can comment on the utility side of things. Especially considering the design balances both of those aspects, and manages to do so with no glaring trade-offs that I've been able to notice, I'm quite happy with it.
(and before anyone asks, no, I'm not 16, I'm 25! Yeah, I know you were wondering.)
As I get more chances to go out and use it, I'll post further impressions here.
