I like big, beefy, high-end folders, and I know a lot of you do too.

Let's share some big folder porn before the government shuts us down.

Here's my big folder collection.

Left column:
Strider SMF (Green G-10)
Chris Reeve Large Classic Sebenza
Benchmade Skirmish 630
Emerson Super CQC-7 BT
Al Mar SERE 2000

Right column:
Benchmade AFCK 806D2
Benchmade 710SBK (154CM)
Benchmade Rukus 610SBK
Spyderco Manix
Spyderco Military

Old pics:

My next big folder purchases:

Kershaw Spec Bump
Lone Wolf Harsey Tactical Ranger (Camo/Black)
Strider PT (Digi-Camo)
Rick Hinderer Firetac

That SERE looks so darn good. I wish I would have bought that just yesterday instead of the other knives I did.

Cliff just put up a review of it, I think, unless it was a dream...didn't the lock fail or something?

Try the Manix, fits like a glove.

The SERE 2000 lock isn't bomb-proof, but it is VERY strong. VERY VERY strong.

Cliff only broke it by doing heavy batoning. Is this abuse? That's a matter of opinion. But it is far outside of the duties to be performed by most folders.

The Manix lock is stronger and the Manix did survive Cliff's similar tests, but the SERE 2000 is a better overall knife in the opinion of many. It's not like the lock failed doing something mundane. Lock failure during heavy batoning should only be a concern to people that plan on doing heavy batoning with a folder.

Until that final test, Cliff said that the lock performed well. Saying the SERE 2000 lock is poor because it "failed" this test is like saying the Manix lock sucks because you blew it up with a hand grenade. Well, sorta. Ya get my point. I like Cliff's tests because they show the extremes, but if the extreme is far beyond what I would do with a knife, it's mainly just entertainment than useful buying information. I know my Buck Rush would explode into a million pieces in one of Cliff's tests, but it's still one of my favorite EDC knives because it does EDC things well. I am more concerned with extreme tests for camp knives than EDC folders.

I am not putting down Cliff's tests, just the notion that they show which knife is better than another.

I like the Manix more than the SERE 2000, personally. But it isn't crazy to prefer the one-hand closing and low-ride clip of the SERE 2000 to the stronger lock of the Manix. Ergos are totally subjective.

P.S. Artfully, this isn't really aimed at you or anything. You didn't say anything wrong. I've just been up for a long time and am ranting.

Thanks.

Nice, beautiful collection. I love slipjoints, too. Big modern folders is just where my heart is right now. But I am very much into variety and am trying to get a little bit of everything.

I have 3 slipjoints now and have 2 more already picked out for my next order from New Graham (along with a Military and Buck Mayo TNT).

Here's a few of my biggest folders. None of them is huge, except for the TOPS, but they are all above average in size and quality!

Cliff breaks all his knives, though, lol.

Batoning is a guaranteed way of breaking a folder. Tom Brown suggests that if you have to do it, do it with the lock disengaged.

Walking Man -

Your first knife is really "hot"...If you don't mind, can you please tell me what kind it is. I'm having trouble reading the text on the blade. Thanks!

Camullus Cuda Dominator, if I'm not mistaken. I don't have one but it's on the list.

I've always liked the larger "tactical" style folders, so here's my contribution to a cool thread. :D

Tossed my EDC SAK in there for comparision since everyone owns a SAK right? :)

Walking Man,what's your opinion on the Tops Ghost Rider? is it a heavy knife?
To answer the other question, YES, it is a dominator, and IMO probably the BEST knife value around. Mine is definately on par with the Seb and better, IMO!
The second question. Yes, it's heavy, but only because it's big. It's a little thick, but not overly so, and it has thick G10 slabs. The TOPS folder was clearly made with attention to deal, as all of the liners match up perfectly with the G10 slabs. It was probably hand finished. My only beef with it is that the ball detent is STRONG, and it's a little tough to open, but that's my only beef. Other that that I relaly like it. Just one thing though, the liner appears to bronze, which is unique. I suppose it could be anodized Ti but I don't know for certain. IMO using bronze or copper or whatever is kind of weird, but I haven't had any problems. Some folks might say the liner is a little for a knife of this size, but I disagree, it's really just fine. One more thing. I really like the ergonomics. It's not really wide knife, even though it's a big folder, so it is very comfortable for me to hold. I've found that many big folders are pretty much made for people with big hands, like the Chinook, but this one feels very good and secure in my hand.
