Big knife needed to chop banana trees?

Hi,

Yesterday I harvested one of our banana trees. I forgot my machete at work and decided to use a big 10" Wustof chefs knife. I was really impressed how much easier the chefs knife sliced through the tree. It got me in the mood for a big, sharp machete.

I looked at the Cold Steel machetes and it looks like they have some nice ones. Are they any good? Any suggestions on a style? What other brands are out there that produce quality big choppers in a moderate price range...say less that $75...but could be more if it's really cool.

Thanks,
Dave

I'd probably go with a Martindale Machete, a Golok, or a HI Khuk for your price range. Those would all serve you well. If you don't have to hump it around anywhere I'd probably go wit the Khukri....they're BEASTS!!! You could get one for under $100 and even around $40 depending on the size you're looking for.

In terms of a "Knife" (I forgot to mention this) I'd probably go with a Ranger RD-9 for around $100. It's a beast that'll take a lickin' and keep on kickin' :D

Look at one of the big choppers from Bark River. Their convex grind makes for a *serious* cutting tool. They are my choice for outdoor work.

Bananas aren't grown on trees , it's just a plant ! Don't try your Wustoff on a real tree. For bananas get a kukri !!

Heck.....
I'd go to wally-world and pick a $10 high carbon machete first.
(or other hardware store) before you decide you need to spend more.
