BK39 handle vs. BK9 handle

I just received a new 39 in the mail. It's an awesome knife to add to my modest collection of Beckers. It will definitely see heavy use. I was able to get a great price on it, and had some Amazon points that brought the price down to what I consider a steal of a deal.

I like the clear coat, but was never a fan of the green handles, so I planned to change them out with some black ones I had laying around. You see, I had purchased several Tommythewho wooden handles for my 5, 7, and 15 in the past couple of years.

Anyway, as soon as I opened the box holding the 9 and was able to get over the shock and awe, I set about to change the handles. Once I had the black ones on, I noticed they seemed less grippy than the green ones. I thought I was imaging things, so I felt the green ones again, and sure enough there is a definite difference between how the two colors feel. Has anyone else noticed this?

By the way, the 39 with black handles looks great, just like I thought it would. I'm very pleased with the look.

Since this knife will definitely not be babied, I'm not sure if I'll ever get wooden scales for it. What are some of your opinions of wood scales for a heavily used Becker knife? Will they hold up?

Thanks for your opinions in advance. This is such a great site.

the Becker micarta is my choice for hard use tools.. its grippy without being TOO grippy and causing hot spots... fills the hand well, and is tougher than wood scales. I have them on most of my big knives and love em.

My Brazilian Ironwood tommythewho scales have held up for nearly a full calendar year of constant abuse, with only one reapplication of tung oil.

The day I got them:

The most recent picture, notice how much extra wear, the handles haven't left that knife since and are still in fantastic shape.

Where's the pics? I wouldn't mind seeing this combination.

Here are a couple. The lighting outside was too much. I may update tomorrow.
I hadn't thought about micarta. I'll have to consider that. If the Brazillian Ironwood holds up well, then I'm a sucker for a nice wood grain. Thanks.

Nice, bet wood handles would look very good too. Might even draw the eyes away from that big ass writing on the blade.

Yeah I went from one extreme to the other. I was bidding on a camillus 9 last week, but let it go at the last minute because I wasn't gonna spend that much for a closet queen. I liked the stamp on that one, but at the price point it went for it was more of a collectable than a user in my book.
The BAW on the side doesn't bother as much as I thought it would. I'll bet it won't even be there in a year with hard use. I like it , and that's all that matters anyway.

It's an awesome blade, my 9 is my most used becker, the writing isn't that bad just a little bit obnoxious to me, won't affect the great handling of the knife. Wear it off, should be a fun challenge, congrats on the a great blade at a great price.

old picture taken right after I got on the Becker bandwagon and bought one of almost everything in about a month..... they mostly all look well loved by now but I haven't updated any group pics since then.... I need to though so I can get the 7, 17, and 21 in there as well LOL

Haha, I'm just giving you some much needed grief in your life. :D I used to get ribbed about my pristine photos too, it's all good.

Wood scales will certainly last, even when you hit them with the log you use as a baton. Ebony is one of my favorites for scales, I like them on shadow slipjoints (no bolster) and have dropped them before on concrete with no issues other than some scratches. Good wood will last, maybe longer than you!

Im one of the few that likes the factory scales. Really rough texture bothers my hands and I dont wear gloves much. I dont own a Becker yet but will soon. Probably the BK9. The two I have tried felt good to me with the factory scales. JMO

Well thanks for the advice. ConBon, I was a little concerned about batoning, but you have eased my mind. I already dove in with some cocobolo scales. The 9 has been getting to work trimming limbs and bushes since the OP. I need to take it to my Dads house and trim the jungle back over there. Can't wait to go camping. This is gonna be a great addition to the 2, 5, and 15.
Here are the updated pics...

It's amazing what modern medicine can do now a days isn't it?!
My only gripe with medicine is that I spilled some on my micarta handle and it dissolved the micarta! The wood table it was on had no problems however [emoji12] .

Great pics guys--if you don't mind me asking, will the G10 TKC or the standard large size Tommythewho scales for the BK9, etc., fit on a BK21 Khukri? I think I need a BK21. Thanks.
