Something about this axe head just doesn't seem right to me.
I did a bit of googling and could find absolutely zero info.
could find ( besides somebody making Axe design T shirts ) were one old Ebay listing on worthpoint and a few of these heads that had been sold in Malaysia.

Also I could be nitpicking, but the head is stamped " The best forged steel " while the label says " Celebrated cast steel " which is odd to me.

I have to say this head doesn't have a very old look to me, and since no information could be turned up on the supposed company or of such a company / business having existed at the address on the label it's making me think this may be a fantasy made for sale in Malaysia.

With that much info to go off of on the axe and label, it should not be hard to turn something up.

I agree with H&S. I bet this is a modern import.
And the million dollar question is what exactly the story could be.

The shape / profile of the head screams modern, while the branding and the wording of the brand and markings say turn of the century.

my thought is a modern head marked and branded to seem like an antique.
The problem is it seems to have been done in or for sale in Malaysia, and is a little too elaborate/ well done for a brand that's made up or just extremely obscure.

I don't believe 194 West Street is there anymore, looks to have been razed for a roadway. The directories for the area don't list a "National Tool Works" ever doing business there, but there was a hardware import/exporter named Markt and Co (and Markt and a few other partners) that serviced Europe, South America, and Asian for a lot of years from that old address.

That brand might've been theirs, I agree that it looks like a new label though.

Well summarized!

On the other hand, if I may say so, I do not see the interest for Asia in sending hatchets manufactured at home to the American market knowing that the USA has far more than enough manufactured hatchets. on its territory.
I contacted an American company with the same name as the one engraved on one of the sides and I am waiting for their response.

Markt and Co wouldn't have been importing axes into America, but exporting out of America to Asia. They were active 1899 - 1920s. They were the only business at that that address over the years that had anything to do with hardware.

Anyway, I think this might be a case of someone buying the old trademark, and using an old trademark.

That is very possible but it's so odd that nothing turns up about the potential reproduction or originals when we have as much as a brand a company and an address to go off of.
