I wanted to use some black epoxy to fill in some file work..

Do I need to buy some. or can I just make it??

The knife has carbon fiber handles, so I was just thinking of mixing some of the carbon dust (from sanding) in with the epoxy, but I wasn't sure about how much to mix..

Any ideas?

K&G sells epoxy and pigments to color it with. I have been using both for years with excellent results. With the pigments, a little goes a long way. Best to experement to get the results that you desire.

There are several ways to dye epoxy in black.
I have make several test to find what work the best for me
(in my case, it is to make mosaic pins)

I tested (after I received advice from others)

- Laser printer or photocopier powder
- Indian ink
- acrylic paint
- modelling paint (for small cars or scale models)

Best the solutions and simplest (and that which I use now, it is painting for scales model (2$ canadian in Walmart), I puts a small drop with a toothpick and it is sufficient...

The Indian ink can work but seems to make epoxy more rubbery...)
Laser printer powder work too, but it is a mess to extract powder from my old cartridges...

Many knifemaking store sell dye especially made for epoxy, that must work well.

No matter the product used, less stuff you put into your epoxy, better it is ... Puts only the dye necessary to obtain the wished colour, not more.

Good luck !

Like Alain, I use Testor's model paint; a couple drops in the epoxy for a knife handle. It will take the epoxy longer to set but it will set just fine.
