I freely admit I bought this knife cause I play Modern Warfare 2.I got to looking at it and thought "how bad of a bush knife can it be?" So I took it for a walk.
Pretty ain't it?

I found a deadish fallen over tree in a clearing. It was chop time.
P3181289.jpg

It bit in deep first swing.

A few more and it was through.

I liked the chopping ability but the jimping was a little rough on the hands.Gloves are recommended.
I wanted to test the back edge as well so with a few more swings I was through again.

The back edge is slightly thicker than the main edge so it didn't bite quite as deep.
Next i let the Fanboy in me loose and tried the weak-side reverse grip stab shown in the game.

I have to admit this is really awkward to do and I missed the tree the first time I tried. But, I persevered and got it to stick in well.

Then something odd happened. The torx screw fell out.I was really lucky it landed on the hard snow and not in the moss.

it didn't break,it just fell out.I took a quick stroll home and tightened it up really snug. The others were a little loose as well.
All back together and I was off and chopping again.I finished off my day with some beauty shots.

All in all it's a solid knife.Wear gloves cause that jimping is killer on the palms.

Thanks for the short review. I have a couple of questions. How did the edge hold up? How comfortable was the sheath? Was retention good?
I think that if they made a version that was not double edged I would be tempted.

Well,As I read your question I shaved some hair off of my arm.No touch ups.The 1095 is good and tough in this knife.
I didn't mention the sheath because it's pretty unremarkable.a dangler sheath made from Reinforced ballistic nylon with a nylon retention strap and belt loop. There's some grommets I looped some para cord through. It holds the knife quite well.the weight keeps it from moving at all. It's quite long so it will hit stuff while your walking or sitting.
here's a pic.

Thanks for sharing. Just found out the top edge was sharpened as well and that guard/choil seems very large.

FYI, tatang is just another term for "father" in Filipino/Tagalog dialects.

I took a file to the jimping and the corners of the choil of mine, and put some soft grip tape on the handle. It's a pretty uncomfortable knife out of the factory.

Nice review.

I've always like the looks of the knife, just never had a need for it. Maybe I'll make a need for it now!

Nice review! Interesting name for those who follow FMA. Design is reminiscent of the Jody Samson, Pacific Cutlery boot knife of the early-mid 1980's. I'd like to see a smaller version of it, maybe call it the "Nanay". Well done!

Matador-

Man, you could shank a dude pretty good with that, I see why it's in COD. That tip looks very pointy.

Nice review, for the "knife of duty" :D LOL

I suggest to put a little drop of blue Loctite on the screws, so they will not fall out again, for the vibrations while chopping.

I really like the design of the tatang, but I think that it's a little bit pricey, comparing it with the Cold steel carbon steel models (almost the same materials & basic sheath, but the fit & finish of the BH models seem better than the CS models).
I see that the current model has the plain edge, if I remember correctly the old version had the combo, I would like to see a version of the nightedge with the plain edge & without the serrations on the back.
Also it would be a clever choice for BH to put on the market a single edged version of the Tatang, to make it legal in more places.

The Tatang comes in both combo edge and plain edge.I prefer plain edged knives so that's what I bought.
I'd like to see the top edge serrated.you'd get the best of both worlds then.

i was thinking about buying one. there is only one problem i had with it. how long is the actual cutting edge on the knife? i didn't want anything too long.
