hi guys
i'm looking into getting a couple of these
according to the seller, these are completely non-magnetic
how to this translate to use in real life? do they set off the detectors at airports? hand held metal detectors?
also, it's also stated that they can be resharpened? is that correct, glass filled zytel refillable?

i'm looking to get them as for their novelty, before anyone jumps on the concealed blah blah wagon :D
just curious about the properties :)

thanks in advance

I have bought a couple of the letter openers for friends, mostly for the novelty value. By the way, I dont think it even makes a good letter opener since the edge is too fat to slit nicely. They are similar to the CIA letter opener AG Russell sells:

Any non-metallic blade will pass through metal detectors if it doesnt have any metal screws, etc. However, it one is so unlucky as to be singled out for a more detailed search, it will probably be a long day with the security people at airports...

so the edge can't be sharpened? darn, was hoping to make some use of it :(
ah well, will make a fun gift

and oh, i have no intention of being caught anywhere near an airport with that
or anywhere else, for that matter :D

that's a sticky qn
afaik there are no clear cut laws on whether a knife is legal or not (actually, an LEO said there were, but apparently he can't find the statue, and neither can i)
so basically it boils down to whether you can convince the LEO that you have a lawful purpose for having the knife
which in this case you might be able to get off by telling him it's a letter opener

i don't intend to find out either way :)

Alright DEA I'm posting this for academic knowledge only any thing you or anyone else does with this knowledge is your own fault etc. blah blah and blah some more.

Part of what I do is to set up security for local state government offices. We use upright garret scanners as well as the hand wands. I can state with authority that the Blackie Collins Letter opener will fly through both with no problem. I have actually taken a garret hand wand, turned it on and set the letter opener on top of it with nary a buzz.

Funny thing is if you open it the spring will coil and then it will set off the wand but only if it's less than an inch away from it. when the letter opener is closed there is no problem with it.

IMHO they are a flimsy novelty item at best. I looked at them a few months ago at a gun show. The loud-mouthed seller was trying to tell everyone how awesome they were and that he had sold many to local LEO's. Really....I explained to him that in my years as an LEO I have never seen anyone with one, nor would I expect to ever see one. I asked him for specifics to no avail.

The edge can be sharpened with a file to a thinner profile. In fact, the instructions that came with those knives specifically mentions this. The edge doesn't cut at all, but it really helps in penetration in a stabbing motion.
