The title says it all, but just in case, i am in fort wayne indiana and looking for an experienced blacksmith to learn from. I have studied alot, but haven't been able to put it into practice. I have a huge brake drum blank from a semi that i plan on turning into a forge. I would be willing to donate the first few pieces we create as payment. I just lost my job, so i can't afford to pay cash. Knife making and blacksmithing in general is something i've always been interested in, i just never had the time.

Try Concordia HS or Elmhurst HS. They both are full of them ;)

I assume you want a knifemaking teacher:
1) Start by filling out your profile, all of it. Age, location, hobbies, occupation, etc. That will tell other makers about you and may get an offer for some hands on visits to local makers.
2) Do some searches on, "Indiana Knifemakers", "Indiana Knife clubs", etc. That will give you many sources of people to contact.
3) Consider taking a vacation this spring or summer and attending the Moran School of Bladesmithing in Arkansas. ( There are also courses held at other places by the American Bladesmith Society)
4) Attend a hammer-in or other knifemaker event.

Good luck

Actually, Elmhurst closed, so there aren't any teachers there. :D

Stacy, are you familiar with Fort Wayne, or did you just google Fort Wayne schools? In case you didn't know, Fort Wayne is where I live.

To the OP:

Are you looking for blacksmiths, or bladesmiths? For blacksmiths, you should hook up with the Maumee Valley Blacksmiths, which is an offshoot of ABANA. I can give you contact info. For bladesmiths, there are a number of them in Fort Wayne. You can find them via google like Stacy said. Speaking for myself, I don't have time to take on an apprentice. :)

Thanks Phillip,
I just did a search. I figured someone in the area would chime in.
