I've started getting Blade magazine subscription renewal letters in the mail. They are asking $25.98 to renew (as a current subscriber) for another year.

If I go to the Blade web site, the cost for a new subscriber is $19.98.

What's up with that? I would think it would be cheaper and more valuable to retain current subscribership. What am I missing from this equation?

no way? i've been a subscriber for about a year. i never noticed that. someone better do some splaining

Most things are cheaper for new subscribers (cable/staellite, phone service).

I've been getting renewal notices for months now, and I let my subscription run out several years ago. Blade's writing and choice of topics were no longer interesting to me, so I decided not to renew. I did however keep my subscription to Knife World.

I think supporting Blade is worth the extra $6 a year, but if it matters, you could call 'em up and tell 'em hell no, I won't re-up unless you give me the same deal I signed up with. Lots of mags want to keep sending you stuff just to keep their subscription numbers high with their advertisers. If they can make a profit on $19.98, my guess is they'd rather keep you. Me, I'd send 'em $30 just to support their work in the knife world.

I got the same thing in today's mail - and I've only been a subscriber for three months. My reaction was pretty much identical to yours.

I don't know what I'm going to do, but I'm certainly not going to worry about it with nine months still left on the subscription. If I have to let it expire so I can "re-up" at the new subscriber price, so be it.

It struck me as being pretty #@*$! greedy, to be completely honest.

After what they did to us, they'll never see a dime out of me again.

and here's what i think...
save the environment and forget monthly magazine format for 365 days.
and then go buy the yearly blade mag cd-rom.

I am not a very hi-tech savvy person, could you please explain how I would get a new monthly edition if I bought a CD. Do they put it all on CD a year in advance, or there are internet renewals involved?

While I'm all for supporting a community I participate in I still don't understand why a current subscriber has to pay more for a membership. I will be calling.

I guess we're not destined to know. But what the heck do I know, I'm not the HPIC. HP maybe, but certainly not IC.
