Has anyone used deer leg bone for smaller hidden tang knifes? Been saving and bleaching a bunch from my last kill. "Dumb ? from the new bee"

They can make a nice knife handle. We will give it a shot every now and then, like the one below, but mostly I will use it on a small blade that I forged.

Bone can be very brittle so go slow and keep the hidden tang long so it will help support the bone. Pewter makes a good guard and can be aged very well if you are making knives for the rendezvous crowd.

Deer leg bone looks great on small forged file knives also.I have use a bunch of deer leg bone over the years.I like to take a kids first deer leg bone and make him/her a specil knife from it so they can take the first deer back to the woods with them...

Harry,That is a sweet looking knife also....

I have used the leg bones of several animals for handles. Mostly shin bone from cows and Elk, but have some deer shins ready for use. After cleanup I let them dry in a light box for a while, maybe a few weeks to a couple months. Then soak them in a 1/2 mix of linsead and turpintine for a month. Let it dries for a few days and this works well and gives it a nice rich color. Almost ivory color.

Clean up after butchering is the hardest part. Make a wire cleaning device from a coat hanger and get most of the marrow out before soaking in borax and water for a fewdays to cut grease, fat and to prevent it from going rancid.

Be sure and show the finished knife. Lin
