Blindly purchased a Leatherman Surge

Most of the time, I try to do a ton of research before I make any knife/tool purchase...

Not this time. I watched part of a YouTube review, looked up some quick specs, and bought it. Literally 10 minutes of thought went into it.

I have wanted a good multitool for a VERY long time. It is important for you all to know that this won't be an edc. Just something for me to have when I'm working around the house, inside and out. I saw "heavy duty" and that was enough for me to pull the trigger. How do you guys feel about the Surge? Will I like it? Do you like yours? Either way, it looks like I own one now :D

It a great multi-tool and very heavy duty. It’s also on the large side.
I love mine and do use it but find myself using the Wave more
Outside the house simply because its more pocket friendly.

I use mine a ton, I've had it for years and it works great. It's a big, heavy son of a gun, so if you're planning on pocket carrying it you might want to reevaluate, but in a holster or in a bag, it's a great option.

The wave and surge are the two leatherman tools that I think are the most fantastic. Get the bit kit and it can do many tasks around the house. I leave mine on my desk in the middle of the house so it's always reasonably easy to get to. I always grab it if I have a larger house projects just in case a random task comes up that I don't have a specific tool for.

This is EXACTLY what I plan to do with mine. Great to hear!

I love mine. It's a solid tool, it's only a question of whether you are committed enough to carry it. ;-)

I EDC'd a Leatherman Surge for 2 maybe 3 years up till this last Christmas when I got a Charge tti. I like the surge but it's big. I gave the Surge to my dad who is a lot bigger than me (6'5 vs 5'11) and he says it fits his hand perfect. The charge on the other hand fits my hand perfect.

The tools on the Surge are nice, but I didn't use the blade exchanger as much as I thought I would. And the scissors, although I used them almost daily, we're not precise enough for me. I liked the big blades, the steel was a little soft though.

The main thing I miss about the surge is the awl. I used that a lot and unfortunately the charge doesn't have one.

I thought about keeping the Surge as a desk tool at work or something, but for $30-40 on Amazon I could get individual tools (plyers/file/scissors/etc) that actually works a little better for me vs a multi-tool.

Well I have lost my Leatherman wave. It has to be around the house somewhere. I picked up a Skeletool last year as a replacement. And it does work as edc. But I'm going to have to get the Surge I have decided on that as soon as funds are available.

I EDC the Surge and have for about 4 years.
I got it to beat on and figured the 25 year warranty would have my back but it has taken all I could throw at it and laughed.

It's a great tool and should serve you for years to cone.

I EDC a surge in a Skinth XL shield horizontally. Works excellent when paired with a main blade (I seldom use the actual blades on the surge).
I own a wave as well, but I had the wave slip a couple of times and got a few blood blisters from the inside of the pliers, so I went for the larger surge and have not had that issue since

Glad you like your multi tool, without a doubt something that non-knife people do not give enough respect. For me, I think a light SAK will serve well for my purposes and as a backup blade. When I get older and maybe transition into a handyman father then a Leatherman will be where I turn to.

I'm sure you won't regret it. I personally own the Wave and find it a perfect tool for doing small repairs/chores/DIY in and around the house.

I own 2 along with many Super Tools.
A Surge is my EDC tool. I can do almost anything with it. Added the bit set and extension plus a couple of saw blades.
OP, good choice!

Thanks to the Leatherman Surge, I now go everywhere with a bag, because no way am I lugging that thing on-body. It's a beast. I tried it and gave up, too uncomfortable!

I'm very glad I've made that decision, for two reasons.

1. My Leatherman Surge has been an absolute god-send on more than one occasion. I honestly think the Surge is the most capable multi-tool on the planet by a pretty long shot, and if I'm carrying my multi-tool in my bag, weight is no longer an issue and I'd like the biggest, strongest and most versatile one available. Yet, it's far from the most expensive. Value for money? Definitely.

2. Because I carry a bag, I can carry fewer items on-body, so if I have to go through an X-ray scanner, I'll just throw what little items I have on-body into my bag. Saves a lot of time and hassle, plus the worry of having lots of small items in an open basket and possibly something getting stolen by someone up front since it's so quick and easy to snatch something out of an open basket.

Long-story short, my Leatherman Surge can not only do more than I'll ever ask of it, but it also forced me to change the way I carry things (minimize on-body carry), which in most day-to-day situations, is for the better.

In my main tool bag for around the house stuff I have:
Long shank Phillips and flat head screwdrivers
Adjustable wrench
Fine needle nose plyers
Slip joint plyers
Qality metal file
An old chisel
Small wood saw
Shears
Hack saw
Utility knife
Sturdy pry tool
22oz straight claw framing hammer
Measuring tools
And a few other things.

No multi-tool could replace all that, but the Surge does a pretty good job of replacing some of the most important tools. I kind of want to get another one now.

I've been buying multi-tools since they first hit the market 20 or so years ago. Currently have a Surge and if I need another multi-tool it will be another Surge or one very similar (I have a bad habit of "gifting" folks my multi-tools for helping me with something so I can get a new one...).
