Blunt or needle nose?

I know this is kinda OT, but a multitool does have a blade in it

.

I really want to get my hands on a cutom Gerber 600, or maybe just go all out for the 800.

Anyway, as far as the 600 is concerned, you can get it in either bluntnose or needle. I think I prefer the bluntnose because it has more surface area to grab things with.

What's your opinions???

I have both needle and blunt nose tools and here is my opinion...I never reach for a tool based on the nose type.I believe a multi-tool is not a substitute for a proper tool, however,a tool to get you through in a pinch.Someone doing alot of fine work requiring needle nose pliers would disagree, but I say, just get regular pliers for that work.
In the end, the user needs to decide if one type is needed more than the other.I haven't found a preference in my situation.

I agree with jharden that these tools are just to get you through in a pinch and that for real work you should get the real tools. However it seems that everytime Im in a pinch the needlenose are more useful. Try to think of all the things that you have needed pliers for 'in a pinch' and look at what type of pliers would have been most useful. For example:
pulling out splinters = needle
fixing the little parts on the camp stove = needle
repairing the zipper on your clothes = needle
fixing a barbed wire fence = blunt
These are expamples of things I run into, yours may be different. I usually go for needlenose.

My Schrade Tough Tool is what I'd call a hybrid. Although it has the profile of needle nose, it still has the surface area of standard pliers. Tough Tool

This is definitely a question you'll have to answer for yourself. It completely depends on what you do. For myself, having gone from a blunt-nose Gerber to a couple needlenose Leathermans, I'm thinking blunt nose is better for me. My pliers uses typically seem to be tightening or loosening nuts, and not finer work. As a result of that, and the fact that I really love the idea of exterior-opening tools, I'm thinking of switching from the Wave to the version of the Swisstool that has the scissors in it.

I'm kinda ticked about that new swisstool. I already bought the first one and now I have to go buy the new one. Sheesh! So what was the tradeoff for the new scissors? Or was it a straight addition?

Go ahead and get that custom Gerber and outfit it with the blunt tip pliers. You never grab anything too small to need the needle, and you can really get a good grip when the blunt end is locked on target.

Good price too.

But the 800 looks soooo sweet, but then again I'd love a yellow 600 with black tools/bluntnose.

I dunno...

Anyone know if the 800 pliers slide out like the 600 does, or does it fold out like on a leatherman.???

Thanks.

I thought Victorinox was just out to get only me.I bought the swiss tool at the Victorinox store and a week later saw the scissors model at some flea bag drug store.
I think we should be offered some sort of rebuild kit to add the scissors

Well, I have to say needle simply because that's what my wave has. Then again I use the other tools a lot more than I use the pliers anyway but most of the work i use the Wave on is very fine work. On the other hand I always carry a spare set of blunt tip pliers just in case.

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.

Needle nose - I carry a Gerber Multi-tool wherever I go. The configuration is versatile for any task.

Both are good , but after having carried a blunt nosed for several years then switched to a needle nosed for the last 2 I can definitely say that the needle nosed is more convenient.
Like everyone says, its not the perfect tool for the job, its a compromise to get you through. The needlenose 600 has a substantial enough tip on it to work like regular pliars. But it can still be used for fine work. Thats the way to go if you ak me. The blunt nosed will get you by but theres alot they can't do. The needle nose can do almost anything I've ever wanted them to and thats a lot.
