Hey guys...

Wondering about a knife for use on a boat... something to cut lines, make a sandwhich... fillet a fish!

Problem is, How to carry... most times when your around water your in a bathing suit... which limits carry options. So, Around the neck? How about a floating knife? Is there a folder that floats?

Salt water... whats something that doesnt corrode?

Big enough to be useable, small enough dollar to not be "that bad" if you lose it... :D

To many questions for one thread!

How about a divers leg knife? I strap one on whenever I'm camping at the coast. Plus I always have my neck knife on.

Even stainless will corrode if left in salt water. Is best to rinse the knife with fresh water and dry if your blade comes into contact with salt water. I picked this one up at Buckshots camp for under 10.00. It's the Swedish Army Knife.

The best knife I've found while wearing shorts is a Frosts Clipper, it has a sheath that clips on like the pocket clip of a knife. You can hang it off your belt or off you pocket like I usually do. They are nice cheap little stainless steel knives that cost about 10bux and are as sharp as a razor. Go to www.eknifeworks.com and do a search for Frosts Clipper.

Longbow beat me to it...
Swedish Army Knife!
At around $10 a pop, get a couple.
If it will be a dedicated boat knife, you could screw/velcro/foamtape the plastic sheath to the boat & it will always be there.
They also come in blue, if you want to keep it nautical.
Follow the SMKW link above.
:D

Kellam Knives also has a stainless puukko in their economical S Line models, which is much like the Frost Swedish Army pictured above. You'd probably have to wear it as a neck knife or rig a belt/webbing to carry it on. The belt loop on its sheath is not conducive to clipping to your pants. It needs a belt or other such thing.

(edited to add) You can also get very reasonably priced stainless steel mora style knives from Ragnar's Ragweed Forge page of Ericsson blades:

I recently bought 2 Benchmade 100H20 knives for the rescue boats of my Fire and Rescue Service.
The H1 steel has had good press.
There is also the Spderco Salt I in H1, but that's a folder.

You may want something a little more expendable though...

I wonder about the laws in NC for having fixed blades on board...

Cant carry fixed on your person :(

I was thinking spyderco millie or something similar, but I'm gonna look into the benchmade.

Kinda goes along the same lines as life rafts...

A couple nice lookin fillet knives here too!

I'll see if I can track down some mora's... those look to be the best bet for the buck.

Then I'll check out the stainless lineup...

How willy my SAK and leatherman wear in a salty air/water exposure? Will I need to keep em well oiled or just whipe them down?

Thanks for the tips guys :D

Oooh...

Another question. Can any divers recomend a decent folding dive knife?

One of those might fit the bill perfectly!

The Boye Dendritic Cobalt is fantastic. $99, non magnetic,Very sharp. It's also easy to sharpen.Impossable to rust.Worth every penny. You can only buy it at the Boye website.

I use my Military around salt water all the time. It does get rust spots if I don't clean it afterwards and keep it oiled however.

I used a spyderco mariner tethered to me back in the day. You might check out the spydie salt1.

The last on intriques me... not the spike but the fact that its 440 steel! Does it rust?

Would that mean that any decent made knife would work as long as its not a tool steel?

Thanks again guys...

Some real cool stuff on here... I'm thinking about a benchmade or two to stash with the life preservers an what not!

The other I might be using is a fillet knife for the fishies! Can anyone recomend a nice one thats easy for cleanup? I've always just used one of those white handled ones ya can grab at any bait shack... but they are pretty much throw aways after awhile...

My son & I got some of these Erikssons from Ragweed Forge a couple of years ago to give to our fishing/camping buddies. They are well put together & amazingly sharp esp. for the $$$. #711 in the photo is in carbon; #746 is in stainless which is what you want for rough use around water.

Please note that these are for dispatching & cleaning fish & misc. camp chores, not for emergency whitewater rescue use. For that function you want a blade more like the Benchmades above -- serrations for rapid rope cutting, & a more rounded point for safety.

hope this is helpful,

Andrew

The more reading I do on the topic... the more inclined I am to purchase a couple of Benchmades fixed blade... safe enough to use around people! Strong enough for rescue, and still not something thats going to rust away.

But in the mean time I may just stop by a west marine and grab something with a spike. :D
