Boker Plus MA-2 Review

attachment.php

I received a Boker Plus MA-2 neck knife as part of a pass around here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...a-Perrin-Tri-Folder-or-Boker-MA-2-pass-around. The MSRP is $29.95 and it retails at our favorite online stores for about $20.

The Chinese made blade is made of 440C stainless and coated in a bronze-colored titanium paint. The chisel-ground, plain-edge blade is 2 1/2" long. The knife is 5 1/8" long overall. The MA-2 weighs 1.6 oz. At 5/32" thick, the knife is one of the thicker neck knives you'll find, but what really sets it apart is the stout edge grind and tip. It is more like an axe or survival knife than an EDC slicer. Think sharpened prybar.

The Boker Plus MA-2 comes with a well-designed fiber-reinforced nylon (FRN) sheath with belt clip. The sheath is minimalist, with just enough FRN to cover the cutting edge and keep the knife securely in place. It really works well and the sheath is one of the best designs I've seen in a neck knife.

The design by Austrian Miltner Adams is interesting. The skeleton frame has holes large enough to function as a knuckle duster if your fingers are small enough. Boker markets the holes as providing "...extraordinary user safety" and states: "With its Top Grip construction, this knife is 100% safe in your hand, in any situation. The handle design allows the user to open their hand in order to grab or hold another object, without the risk of losing the knife. An extremely compact piece, ideal for a variety of tasks."

After a day of carry, I can say the Boker Plus MA-2 isn't a bad knife for $20, but it wouldn't be my choice for EDC. It is more of a prybar than a slicer and a little too small for my large hands. I'll carry it a few days more and report back. Thanks to TheAznInvazn for loaning me his knife.

Nice shot of the knife on your shoes!

I do agree that slicing isn't the MA-2's strong point, but I do think that it can be a very nice tool thanks to the thicker blade and robust tip

You just haven't lived until you've watched the Miltner/Adams demonstration videos on YouTube for the original versions of these knives. :D

See, even with slippery hands you can lift a 70 lb motor with it and fire your rifle while holding it! They didn't spend any time showing you if their design cuts well which can be rather important for a knife, even a "practical tactical" knife.

Lava, thanks for the link! I mean no disrespect towards the knife in this review, I'm sure the Boker version is well worth the price, it's just that the video struck me as a tad funny.

I have the Boker version. It was dull when received. The grind was uneven and so thick I didn't even bother to thin it out with my hand tools. The gun show sharpener wouldn't thin it out either, too much work, but he did make the existing edge sharp. Even sharp, the edge grind is too thick to slice up an apple.

For the sheath, the screws are tiny and hard to handle, thus you won't be easily changing the clip position. I did it once and it took about 1 minute to unscrew, but about 10 to get it reattached. For a right handed person, the sheath is great for right side front of belly carry, but anywhere else, it's hard to draw.

Not worth the $20 IMHO, I couldn't give it away to a fellow knife knut, but that was before it had an edge, maybe they'd take it now.

Tactical, yeah. I have one of the originals. I was wearing it as a necker when my LEO brother-in-law came over. We were talking and I reached between two buttons of my shirt and then looked down. When he looked down he saw the tip of the blade just under his chin.

It is not a great all-purpose utility knife, but like lot of small neckers, it can be handy for some basic tasks. You definitely should evaluate what you would use it for. A lot of other knives are more multi-capable, including many from Boker.

Strange
When I wore it, I almost exclusively drew it left handed reverse grip

I've also heard that the first versions of this blade had some major quality control issues
I believe they have been fixed for the most part. My MA-2 came quite sharp

In any case, I appreciate the honest opinion!

I remember when those came out - that video is still pretty funny. We should have more explosively bonded knives!

Yeah, my comments are/were only about the video not the knife itself since I've never used it. I don't understand why they would make a 10 minute long video and not show the"knife" cutting anything.

"I don't understand why they would make a 10 minute long video and not show the"knife" cutting anything." I do :)...the Boker version could not cut out of the box.

At least the Boker version is inexpensive but the original was a bit pricy and they showed you that you'd have a great grip on the knife but never that it would cut well which is kinda important for a knife.

I almost bought the Boker version a week ago from the latest A.G. Russell catalog so I'm glad i found out that it doesn't cut well. I receive and then need to cut up so many cardboard boxes for my business and rather than use my A.G. Russell Acies, which cuts better than any knife I own but I'd rather use a cheaper knife for work.

Love the five fingers!
Not so sure if I'd dive for one of those blades myself though

Anyone noticed that the knife seems to come with 2 sizes of belt clips in the YouTube videos on it? I was excited to get one for front belt edc but when it came it had the small clip which is only good for a 1" belt. Who wears a 1" belt?! I called Boker and they said I was dreaming and that the knife has always had one clip size. Not so according to the dozen videos on it as well as this review. Very disappointed.
