Boltaron for Breakfast (sheath issue)

I just got a Benchmade hidden canyon hunter in the mail today. The one with the richlite and the boltaron sheath.

I have already fallen in love with the knife. It seems just perfect for my edc needs and wants.

The sheath, however, is a different story. It looks really good, but it's terrible so far. If you don't insert the knife at EXACTLY the right angle, it's very difficult. But worst of all, every time I take out the knife little pieces of boltaron come with it, sticking to the blade and falling all over the place. Here are some pictures:

The first picture is the result of me putting the knife in and taking it back out over a piece of paper for a few times to see if the problem would lessen. It does not seem to. The second pic is the result of one time of removing the knife from it's sheath.

I might want to use this for some food-related tasks, and this doesn't seem healthy. It's like a cheese grater, but for boltaron. In fact, I don't want this mess anywhere near me. Not near my keyboard, not near my house, not near my workplace. Also, It can't be good for the knife, right?

Did I get a defective sheath or does it just plain suck?

(I'm in the Netherlands and this knife costs €272 / $ 325 here, so the latter would be a bit weird.)

What should I do? I really really like the knife and I don't want to return it if I can help it.

Is it possible you could keep the knife and contact Benchmade about the sheath? I had a minor problem with a Benchmade knife, and they responded quickly.

Thanks for the reply. I've been thinking about that a bit the past few hours. I know Benchmade has a good warranty, but I'm in the Netherlands, so that may change things. Also, in the Netherlands, the usual route is through the dealer, but I saw the knife go out of stock after my order, so I'm sure they don't have any spare sheaths laying around.

I think I will contact both the dealer and Benchmade if this thread doesn't yield any other advice. Part of me is still hoping for an easy fix, even though I know it's a long shot. That would be awesome. Failing that, the second best thing for me is if it turned out this was a lemon and someone (either Benchmade or the seller) sent me another sheath. If I wasn't lefthanded, I could settle for the leather one as well, but alas.

Another goal of this thread was to ascertain that I'm not doing anything wrong and this isn't how it's supposed to be.

I also wanted to know if others might have encountered a problem like this.

Edit: I just emailed the seller. I figure if they want me to return the entire knife or quote a very long turn around time, I can always see what Benchmade can do to help. Worst case scenario is that I make a leather sheath myself, although I would consider that a blemish on this knife and the Benchmade brand, considering the price.

I've had three different Hidden Canyon (the newest S90V Richlite version) and the sheaths were absolute shit on all of them. How Benchmade can think that a thin misshapen wonky piece of garbage like that counts as a sheath for serious backcountry hunting is beyond me. Shameful, really! The knife is very nice though, so I bit the bullet and spent additional money to purchase an Armatus Carry kydex sheath for this model.

That's what I was afraid of. The seller told me they needed to confer what they could do for me, but I haven't heard back since.

One thing I forgot to mention that makes this situation even more annoying: Knivesandtools (large Geman/Dutch knife retailer) only carries a kydex sheath for the old version of this knife (the 15016 model, not the current 15017 version). So you would have to order from Armatus Carry directly.

Thanks, Knivesandtools is also the retailer in question. They've been good to me so far, but even since the Corona crisis they've been a bit slower to respond and to get stock. I could always try to make my own leather sheath. But in that case a discount would be fitting, I think. A crappy sheath like that on a knife priced like this is shameful, tbh.

(Benchmade, are you reading this?)

Update:

It got even worse somehow, and I've barely used the knife.

See the knife poking through the sheath? This is hands down the WORST sheath ever. Benchmade should be ashamed.

Now I probably need to sharpen the knife before I even used it more than 5 minutes. What a downer.

I haven't heard anything back from the retailer yet. Gonna write them a stern e-mail monday. Meanwhile, I decided to make my own leather sheath from scratch.
