Howdy,
I've been meaning to post this a few weeks ago. On Suvivorman, in one of the episodes, he was carring a bone knife for cutting seal meat. I don't want to get in an argument about the best knife. But I was wondering, has anyone on here ever use a bone blade knife? What " bone" are they made out of? What animal? Do they keep up over time? Can you butcher large game with one?

I remember when I was younger I bought a alligator jaw bone knife that was pretty sharp and may be able to do decent cutting. My knife was never really used hard but it chipped a little and was kind of fragile. It would be better than nothing but not my first choice in a knife :p .

I had a knife made out of a split cow rib for years. It worked best as a scraper, not good for cutting. could make a saw edge and it would work better for light stuff. lots of people make bone saws from shoulder blades and other larger bones that cut ok if your into the primitive stuff or in a pinch.

I've definitley been lacerted by bamboo, split! I beleive it!

Shoulder blades, at least, were used as cutting tools and scrapers.

Bone was also used for awls and sewing needles. (Years ago, I was given a 6"-long awl made of a deer leg bone by an Apache boy my age. Still have it. Works fine on canvas or leather. The joint end was partially left in place for a larger surface to press against.)

I have made needles, you can grind the bones against a rock or just cut them to shape with a knife. I have not made a larger knife, but they were used by many cultures.

Bamboo is excellent for a knife, they get sharp enough you can shave with them. As far as bone I would guess they would be made out of a larger leg bone (hallow). so when you split it open, there is already a good edge started.
