Boot knives- on boots?

I was pondering a knife to carry on the ankle, and was thinking that a boot clip would be uncomfortable and that the sheath would flap against your leg.

Has anybody carried a boot knife or ankle sheath?

The setup I was thinking of would be a kydex sheath with eyelets that ran over the same holes as a standard combat boot, and a strap or elastic that looped around the ankle to tension the sheath to the boot. This way the boot can be taken on or off quickly.

Any thoughts on carrying a boot knife in a military or wilderness environment? (I personally would not conceal one in the public)

Thanks!

Always seemed to me in the woods or in combat you would be putting it where it would be more likely to get wet, muddy, dirty. I did, when I was young and thought I was salty, try carrying one on the inside of my combat boot with the clip on type sheath...most uncomfortable thing I ever did. There are some knife sheaths made today designed like ankle holsters for handguns that probably would be fairly comfortable but you are still placing it in the dirtiest carry position you can on your body, and potentially the wettest.

Yeah I am not a fan of carrying fixed blades over my ankle. For many reasons.
#1 uncomfortable and dangerous if you slip and fall your ankle will not come off well with a big fixed metal item over your ankle.
#2 as previously said water and carbon blades don't mix.

i was just pondering this, earlier today. i would like to start carrying a boot knife, actually on my boot, at work. problem is: most tactical boots, these days, are thick and padded at the top and most "boot" clips are more suited for belts. i'm still trying to figure out the best way to secure one, where it'll stay place in fights/foot pursuits, but'll also be readily accessible. if i get it right, i'll let you know.

If you're not gonig to carry it in public, then why not just carry it on your waist or whereever it's comfortable?

I ask that, because as has been mentioned, your ankle attracts alot of "gunk." I ankle carried a S&W 442 revolver (Enclosed hammer) for a number of years as a back-up on my ankle. I'm glad I carried an enclosed hammer revolver. I had to clean it daily & it was amazing how much junk it attracted.

If you can help it, I wouldn't carry it on your ankle. I've carried a number of FBs & folders IWB carry W/O any problems.

Good luck on what you decide to do.

FWIW i dont like the CS spike, not for me at all.

i did used to carry a bud nealy pesh kebz 5" in or i suppose on would be a better description my cowboy boots, on his MCS system ya can put a flap thing on the sheath and it rides inside the boot and the sheath is outside, covered by the pants, was ok is suppose but wouldnt wanna do it all the time lol, also carried a gerber guardian clipped inside the boot, again, ok but wouldnt wanna edc it that way.

I used to carry various boot knives clipped to the top inside of my old Dingo boots back in the '70s. Heavier ones would flop around under intense action but would stay put. The western style boots with the hole for pulling them on are great when you slip the clip through the hole from the inside. Some knives will rattle in the sheath even though I don't think it could be easily heard you could feel it. Any kind of straps or bands seems unnecessary unless you have it strapped only to your leg/ankle. The Gerber MKI was one of the better carries in the western boot, the Guardian seems a bit puny in comparison.

When I was in the Army, we were called up for Desert Sheild. We were issued a Pilots Survival Knife and we either carried it on our LBE or on our leg. We had a leg harness set up to put the knife on the outside of our leg just below the knee. I have seen those leg harnesses for sale in BrigadeQuartermaster. Im not for carrying one that way but for what I remeber it was comfortable and I had gotten use to it. It was also very secure. You may want to look into that. I still have mine put up in my military gear somewhere. Thats the only way I ever carried a knife on my leg that was comfortable and it worked really well.

I used to carry a Sting, clipped to my boot. Then, it moved to my belt. Finally, a Spyderco folder is clipped to my pocket. My brother has the Sting.

U.S. Army Jumpmasters used to have the Ontario Pilot Survival Knife duct taped to their lower leg (on the boot). This was used for quick deployment to cut a jumpers static line if the jumper was "Hung Up".

Has anybody carried a boot knife or ankle sheath? ...

Thanks!

I have a CS palm dagger (the longer one) that I've had for many years. I had a custom ankle sheath made for it from soft leather. The strap is very wide and snaps around my ankle so that it holds the sheath snugly at the back part of my ankle between the ankle bone and the back of my foot. If I wear it under athletic socks, it's nearly invisible.

The top of the palm dagger sits right at the top of my sock so it's easy to pull. It's also surprisingly comfortable. I've worn it for hours at a time without getting rubbed raw or having it slip.

The downside is that it's not quick or stealthy to reach for something on your ankle. It's more of a last-ditch SD tool than anything else. It also has no use in the woods so I never carry it there. For me, it's strictly an urban survival tool.

The most uncomfortable place to carry a knife is next to your ankle on the inside of your boot.
I need the top of my boot snug to my ankle for support, now stick a knife between my boot and my ankle?????
I need to protect my feet, but not with a knife!!!

And tactically, it is the most absurd place to have a knife.

Er, excuse me, Mr. Enemy.
This is a suprise move.
I just need to bend down on to one leg, pull up my trouser bottom, and pull out my knife.
Stand up and move in to a tactical position.

I carried my boot knife on the IWB front left under my load webbing.
Either hand on my rifle.
Either hand to pull.
Thank G-d, never needed to pull it.

This wouldn't be for me, Its for friends of mine going into the military. I wont be making it soon, but maybe next year.

Well I have the ZT 0150 boot knife, and so far I haven't even thought of attaching it to a combat boot. For me, it is readily accessible on my belt Small of Back, or appendix--directly in front of me. Easily concealable if needed, and also it is quite comfortable--I don't really feel it in either places (and I'm a slim guy too)

The only thing where I think a boot knife would be useful is if you were on the ground and someone wanted to attack you from there. Something like in the Dirty Harry movie.

Do them a favor and do not do it.

A knife IWB, on the belt or IBE will be more easily accessible, comfortable, user friendly, and will result in much less grief from their comrades.

It sounds just like what some kid would want when thinking about playing army.

Depending upon the command and how strict they are it may even be contrary to regulations.
