Hey guys at my work I have to carry a box cutter since i cut quite a lot of boxes. I'm looking for something a little nicer than normal cheap Home Depot ones also one that is kind of unique because there's tons of incidents of people's getting taken at my work.

If I was limited to only a box cutter, or allowed to bring my own knife but theft was rampant, I'd buy a bedazzler and make the ugliest, most conspicuous cutting instrument I could muster. Everyone would know that that neon monstrosity was mine and anyone else seen using it would be detected in short order and outed as a thief.

When I stocked shelves for a living years ago I actually preferred the cheap tap knife cutters. Thin and light and easy to stow in my back pocket so it was never available for someone to "borrow" it.

I would wrap a few layer of self adhesive ace bandage around the handle and it was quite comfortable to use for a long time.

Most importantly of all the exposed blade was always at the perfect length so you didn't cut through the box to the merchandise, unlike a lot of the folding and retracting cutters available now.

You might want to talk with your supervisor before spending any money. Box cutters are used where I work but only the ones issued by the company are to be used per safety regulations.

I managed a wholesale warehouse for several years and never once used a run-of-the-mill box cutter or utility knife -- partly because I'm a knife guy, mostly because I don't trust industrial box cutters.

I EDC'd a bunch of different knives -- various sizes and designs, all locking folders, all one-handers -- before settling on a Kershaw 1820 "Needs Work." :) It's stout, strong, sharp, snappy and (to my eyes) butt-ugly. It's also the best warehouse knife I've ever used.

For something really unique, keep an eye on Veleno Designs (Steve Ku). They're pricey though, and sell out fast!!!

There are several companies that make them but the ones we had here were "Super Knives". It's basically a utility blade in a folding knife. We sold them for less than $10 and they are decent for the price and their use. They had a big aluminum area that engraved really well too if you're worried about theft. If I were to stock shelves again, like I did in high school, I would get one of those.

Nothing wrong with Home Depot box cutters. I picked up one of these Husky cutters a few years ago for under $10 and they are pretty heavy duty for what it does (cut boxes open). I wouldn't want to be carrying anything that cost over $40 in a warehouse. I have worked in places like that before and theft is common.

I think also part of the reason is because I like carrying unique knives and when carrying a box cutter I don't carry a knife(to much clutter in my pockets) so I want to carry something that feels like a replacement for me

For over 40 years i'very used simple sleeve type razor blade cutters.Cost one dollar. Cheap blades. Why ruin a knife. Makes me scratch my head in wonder.

Why not carry the box cutter in a belt sheath? Then you can carry whatever knife you want in your pocket.

The Gerber EAB Lite is a great frame lock, one-hand-opening/closing utility knife with a deep carry pocket clip. It's small, light, and inexpensive. It's the only thing I'd recommend from Gerber. You can buy one for less than $10.

DLT took my suggestion of a super knife. Deep carry clip, liner locking box cutter made with decent materials for a nice price. I used one in college while unloading the refrigerated trucks and opening tons of boxes while working at a restaurant.

I cut a lot of boxes at work too, i prefer a modern folding knife.

But if theft is an issue, I'd just use those crappy box cutters.
Though my knife works so much better.

What's your budget?

There are lots of "alternative" box cutters out there and Gerber makes a few of them...

Or just buy a cheapo knife so you don't have to worry about someone snaking it from you.

^^^^This.

Best box-cutter for the money on the market, and it doesn't really feel like a typical box cutter. It's a locking folder and has a pocket clip...

I agree entirely. A friend picked one up for ~$8 on amazon a while back for work as we're constantly breaking down boxes for the recycle pile. You need a screw driver to swap the blades though which some people don't seem to care for.

I've carried the lower one in the pic as my EDC for years. The top one I bought as a replacement when I thought I'd lost the EDC. I tried the larger ones also available at Harbor Freight for <$5 but they were too heavy and bulky in my pocket. A belt loop carrying case works well with the larger one. Their beauty lies in the fact that the blade is always sharp being replaceable. I've never had a situation where the 1/2" blade didn't do the job be it opening boxes or cleaning my fingernails or whatever one does with an EDC.

What we now call a Box Cutter was called a Utility Knife or Sheet Rock knife years ago. It can be used for a lot more than just opening boxes. They are great for cutting linolium, carpet, sheet rock ceilinf tiles etc. Also great for sharpening pencils! My 40 year old Stanley utility knife holds 6-8 extra blsdes in the handle too.
