i have read in this forum several times about silver brazing. what is the difference between silver brazing and brazing with brass? ive used brass rods to braze many times over the years. is silver stromger than the brass or is it just for looks? thanks willy!!!:D

Willy the main difference is the temperature required. All of the silver solder we use has a much lower melting temp so it does not effect the heat treat of the blade.

You pick the brazing alloy for what you are brazing, temperature range and color.

Robert, there is a difference between siver braze, and silver solder, and yes it involves temperature, but I do not recall the line of departure from solder. I often silver braze threaded rod to tangs, so, for some, silver brazing may be a common procedure in knife making.

Silver Solder Melts At Approx 430 Degrees.
Silver Braze Melts At Approx 1200 Degrees.
I Have Heard That A Properly Clearenced Joint That Has Been Silver Brazed Is Stronger Than If It Was Welded.
I Believe Silver Braze Is Much Stonger Than Brass.

You can get silver braze from the jewlery supply companies. It will com in 3 temp ranges usually and it is not the low temp silver solder we use for guards...I likie the silver braze over welding on tangs and have never had any trouble out of it.

I absolutely love the idea of silver brazing (the strong process) allthread to tangs. Now If I am correct it is done after fitting the guard but before silver soldering the guard.---Joe

Just to give an example of how strong Silver Braze is, I used to silver braze 1x2x1/8 inch carbide faces on pulverizing hammers. If it was done right they would old up until the 1 inch sq block disintegrated behind it. Used to pulverize charcoal etc for activated water filters. Very Strong Stuff......

I have a bit of the silver brazing rod. What do I have to do to make it work effectively on stainless?
