What's your choice for rust protection? Anyone using Breakfree-CLP with good results on non-stainless blades?

40+ years owning and using knives and firearms has taught me that any quality lube is as good as another. It's a "Chevy vs. Ford" thing. Everyone has their favorites, and in my experiences - they are all about the same. I've used them all.

Josh did some testing if you care to read through this thread.

Honestly unless you are in a highly corrosive enviroment or storing for long periods most will do the job.

CLP attacks Brass. So keep away from your Buck handle and your brass washers.

Go food-safe, non stinky :)

Depends on what you mean. If it is a carrier and user, you won't need any rust protection. Patina and use will be all need, just wipe the blade after use before you put it back in your sheath-pocket.

Frog Lube did not work out in long term storage for me and I don't even live in a humid landscape. I've had multiple blades show rust spotting (mostly 5160, O1 steel) over time.

May be, I did something wrong in the application of it, but it's been enough knives with pepper spots that were frog lubbed that I can't ignore the reasonable connection and conclusion that it the substance does not work out long term. Short term is likely fine.

Back to Rem oil with Teflon.

Tuffglide/tufcloth. Plain ol’ cheapo mineral oil for blades that will cut food. Worked for me for a looong time.

Tuff glide leaves a residue, and on really tight fitting automatics can cause them to bind over time. A bit of CLP fixes them right up

Eezox if the best I've ever used...on most of my tools and all guns. Coat, let sit for a few, wipe off...repeat 2-5 times.

I've used BreakFree CLP for years with total satisfaction; it protects and lubes. If you want to go really cheap, just wipe down your blades with Vaseline -- it's food safe, too.

Project Farm on YouTube did a comparison of a lot of different corrosion prevents. worth watching.

I use Breakfree for firearms and like it ok, but find it’s a little more likely to gather dust/grit than just a light Hoppes oil.

Knives I typically used mines oil, but with unused knives (and living on the coast) I’d get occasional rust spots.

For the last 5 months these have been wearing a thin coat of 100% tung oil that was diluted with orange oil solvent. Tung oil is a drying oil and so far seems to be doing a better job at preventing rust than mineral oil. I haven’t found any comparative testing online for tung oil but if anyone out there has please let me know.

It’s well known as a wood finish, but doesn’t seem to be popular for knives. That might be because it leaves a clear but visible hard residue…? Doesn’t bother me!
