Brick & Mortar Knife Shops?

It seems that the majority of the forum members purchase knives online. What local brick & mortar knife shops do you support?

I wish there was one around here. I miss the camraderie shopping online like you experience in a nice small gunshop who's owner loves to talk guns. I'm trying to convince a friend in Gettysburg, PA to carry knives in his vacuum and sewing machine shop. This way the husband/boyfriends would have something to check out while their wives/girlfriends are messing w/ the vacs or sewing machines. Atleast that's the arguement I'm trying to wear him down with

Anybody near Gettysburg that would stop in and special order or buy what he has in stock if I can convince him to take the plunge?

Heck, any brick and mortar shops near the PA/MD/VA or West VA border areas?

Just curious, ever time I go to a knife show it makes me wish I had a shop around that I could go to and check out the new models. The little extra cost to cover overhead is worth it to me. Thanks for listening to the rant!

The only shops that I know of near me in Baltimore, are Chesapeake Knife & Tool, with several locations in the area. There is a good sized knife store in the King of Prussia mall as well, but can't remember the name immediately, but it is near on of the entrances.

If you ever get south, check out Beck's Cutlery in Raleigh, NC. They have the biggest selection of Randalls I have ever seen. They are first line stocking distributors for all the major lines and always seem to have unobtanium, especially rare Benchmades. They are the sole US distributors for South African knifemaker Peter Beauchop. He makes some killer stuff. They also have a good selection of tactical customs. I drive 3 hours each way occasionally just to check them out.
BTW, this is an excelent topic!

Chesapeake Knife & Tool leaves me cold but thanks for the heads up about King of Prussia. The owner/operator knife shops are the one's I miss. I wonder if the one in Frederick, MD is still in operation? Country Knives in Intercourse, PA is a perfect example of a knife enthusiasts type of shop.

David, as a side note; My uncle who lives in Shelby, NC has nothing but good things to say about Beck's Cutlery. He drives hours to it also.

I am very fortunate to live in the Portland, Oregon area. Portland Cutlery is pretty nice, but George and Son Cutlery has got to be one of the best in the country.

Carl George is the third George to own and run the place, 3ed generation. He grew up sharpening knives. It would not surprise me if there is NOBODY in this country who has sharpened more knives than Carl George. And he is so friendly. He will talk to you for an hour if you let him.

Then, take about a half-hour drive south and you can visit Northwest Knives and Collectibles in Salem, Oregon, one of America's finest collectible knife dealers.

I feel I'm also lucky to have a good storefront near me; namely, fellow BF member Dennis Wright of Wright Knife. He has a wide selection of factory stuff, carries more Buck, Spyderco and Benchmade models than any other knife store in our county. He also carries all the Chris Reeve stuff and several custom pieces.
I love to shoot the breeze with him about knives and we've been known to dish on forum
topics and personalities on occasion

If you're ever in San Diego area, stop by and check his place out.

Another vote for Wright Knife. I'm glad I discovered his shop almost 4 years ago almost by accident. He has stuff to an extent not found in any other shop in San Diego County, not to mention he's very knowledgeable and great to shoot the breeze with.

Hey guys, living here in L.A. I occasionally get down to the San Diego region. Could one of you e-mail me the adress to Wright Knife?

Thanks,
Dave

errr... Nevermind, I found his website. Gotta check before I post. Thanks.

This is not a syllogism.

I've been to Country Knives in Pennsylvania. Man, that place rocks. Who'd have thought you would find such great selection in the middle of Amish Country? We spent a fortune there.

In the greater St. Louis area, Grand Prairie Knives in Troy, Illinois has a great selection and they are cheaper than most internet operations.

I've purchased some knives from "Jack Knife Bob's" in Columbia, MO. Seems like a good guy. Some prices better than internet, some higher.

I've also bought online from Roger at Bayou Lafourche. He is a brick and motar store that also sells online.

I'd recommend either of these.

I haven't made it up to Country Knives yet but I have been planning on a day trip up there.

I have been to AMH Cutlery in Baltimore and found them very reasonable and pleasant. Unfortunately they have somewhat limited hours and are not easy to find.

I worked part time in a Chesapeake Knife and Tool a while back. They generally carry decent merchandise but I can find much better prices online.

I am lucky enough to have four well stocked places within 20 minutes of my home.
Bass Pro Shops national headquarters.
Ozark knife and gun
Surplus City (military knives)
Grizzly Industrial carries a load of case, Junglee, buck, etc. I do buy from them too. These are in Springfield, Mo.

The first knife was probably used to cut stuff.

I own a brick and morter store at Apple Blossom Mall in Winchester, VA. (On the VA, WV, PA, MD border.) I was very lucky, as the mall was looking for a knife store. I opened a 600 square foot store on Oct. 1st 2000. (Just in time for Christmas!) I had done ren-faires, conventions, and historical re-enactments for 10 years before opening this store. I also worked at Chesapeake Knife and Tool during a previous Christmas Season.

I was amazed at how many people were looking for a good cutlery store. Yes alot of people buy online. I can't always compete with online prices or the prices from Smokey Mountain or Bud-K. The one thing, I can do is offer them service and knowlege they can't get from a catalog (an easy layaway plan, special orders filled quickly, and a no questions asked return policy).

I carry everything from $9.95 Pakistan specials, to the latest tactical knives as soon as they are available, to some great handmade knives and swords. My staff is knowlegable, friendly and polite. They know what makes each knife special, and what is coming out when.

My distributors have been extremely supportive, answering off the wall questions, giving historical information on old knives, finding odd-ball requstes etc. One of my suppliers even came out to do a sharpening weekend!

Apparently I'm doing something right. I had an incredible Christmas season (with less than 10 gift returns). The mall is so happy they lowered my rent to make sure I stayed. I am doing well enough even during this slow season, that I have added 2 more 6 foot display cases.

Yes I've worked incredibly hard, and spend a hugh amount on advertising, but I am doing what I love and am making a lot of people happy and satisfied.

Online stores have their place, but nothing beats the family atmosphere of a brick and morter store.

BTW. Country Knives in Intercourse is a great place! The people were a big help when I talked to them last May. Also, the knive store in Fredrick MD is alive and well last time I checked. He was also running a growing internet knife store. I haven't checked out the mall store at King of Prussia but I've heard good things.

Sorry this is so long,

Pam Sheirer

Does anyone know of the name of the knife store in Frederick, MD? And, do they have a web site?

Thanks.

Regards,

David

Just a note of warning. If you want to make a trip to Intercourse, PA just to go to Country Knives, you should probably do it in the next couple of months. Intercourse is a major Amish tourist trap and once the summer hits, the area becomes very crowded. It's worth it, though. The store is gorgeous.
