British Army Knife?

Has anyone ever seen a British Army Knife? A friend of mine from England told me they are similar to SAKs. Anyone here own one?

During WWII the Brits issued a "clasp knive" to their troops. It had a large sheepsfoot blade, a combination bottle-can opener and a marlin spike. When the knife blade was closed, there was a projection on the end of the knife designed to be used as a screwdriver. All the specimens that I have ever seen had black plastic handles and were blademarked "sheffield". The workmanship left a lot to be desired. The blades ususally require some effort to open and extend.

I saw some advertised in the GUNLIST last week. Used models were $6-7 and unissued WWII models abound $20.

I do not know how long the knives were issued. I spent some time around the British Army Of The Rhine (BAOR) in the mid 60's but do not recall any of the squaddies using an "issue" knife. Hopes this helps some. If I can find a reference I will e-mail.

jaysouth,

Welcome to the forums!

I have a knife that looks a lot like you describe, except the slabs are stainless steel, and the workmanship is excellent. I got it from the Brookstone catalog many years ago.

It is really hard to open the knife blade, and the steel is hard to sharpen, but took forever to dull.

Hi AllenC

By coincidence, about 2 weeks ago, I posted a query regarding the British army knife which you mentioned.

I have one that is marked 1953 with an abbreviation of "RBS". I was wondering if it stands for Royal British Surveyors.

It has been part of my small collection for at least 35 years. The blade is hard to sharpen but it is one tough knife.

It has its uses but now it holds mainly childhood memories for me. I guess it was one of those things that sparked off the knife interest in a little boy that never left him even though in his adult years.
