OK- the better half will not let go of her landline AOL. She is very skeptical of broadband. I all other things I rule-;) -well-mostly. I now have a notebook-is there ANY way I can set up a broadband account on the notebook without interfering with the dialup and her desktop? Please help. Thanks:thumbup:

Skeptical of broadband ??? If she ever goes to broadband she'll ask 'why didn't I do this long ago ?" You have ,depending on location two types .One uses phone lines [DSL], and the other uses cable ,[ TV type ]. Here I have DSL but could also get cable as Time Warner Road Runner.I'm not sure if you could get DSL and also dial-up . You should have your wife spend some time on somebodies broadband ,she'll be convinced.

I know dialup sucks but we divide the utilities and the phone line is in her name. The broadband would come out of my knife allowance- is there anyway to connect to broadband w/o using a land line?

Cable or wireless internet if they are available would work without a landline. It might be possible to use DSL (which requires a landline) while she is using her dialup. I can talk on the phone while using my DSL. Someone else will have to answer that question.

Yep, just ask your cable company if they offer internet services. With time warner you can get download rates of up to 8Mbps. I think that their basic rate of 1.5Mbps starts at about $20 a month.

Sure, you can use one of the satellite broadband options. *snicker* DSL and cable are technically using landlines.

I guess my question is, what is her reservations? Cost is the only really significant one.

I used to work in DSL, as has been said there is no reason you couldn't use the DSL while she uses her dial-up. Use it in the same room and it should take about 10 minutes before she's splitting the DSL bill with you!

Warning- ask your phone company how far you are from the Central Office- DSL is very distance sensitive. If they tell you that you qualify for their highest speed, you should be good to go- if they tell you they can only sell you the slowest speed tier (usually 384 or 768) I would suggest going with cable.

hmmm, don't get DSL IMO, good phones lines are critical, and the phone co wankers love to steal your data line (if it's not on you voice line) to give to someone getting new service. :jerkit:

Plus when there's a problem, the phone people will blame the dsl provider and DSL will blame the phone co.
