Overview:

I was originally drawn to the design and materials used in this BB2.0 (Brous Bionic 2.0) flipper. It seemed like a high quality knife for the money, but as you will see there are some small things that make it hard for me to recommend the knife for the price. Please note that I do not have the luxury of inspecting knives before I buy them. This is my first Brous product so I am judging it as it comes, out of the box. I judge all knives the same and I do not care if it is a $500 Sebenza or a $50 value knife. I only post these reviews so I can share my experience with others.
First impressions:

Great looking knife, eh? Yeah, I think so too. In the hand it feels solid but not heavy. The design on the aluminum does provide some traction. Definitely in the category of an EDC knife for chores or light tasks. The blue finish is a perfect hue to my eyes and I think the black on blue finish looks nice. It is indeed a smaller knife.

Flipper:

Works well and feels smooth. It IS a bit stiff before launch, but once started it seems to glide out.

Despite my want to love it, I can not. Lets get started with the problems I initially noticed...

First is really minor, but there are some good dings on the inside here:

Matter of fact, all around the knife there are ding marks here and there and some finish blemishes. Not impressed at all.

Out of box sharpness and grind: Lets start with poor.....

As you can see, it is ground all the way back to the sharpening notch.

It is ground straight and will sharpen like a razor except:

The grind does not taper properly and leaves a good bit of material un-ground at the edge. Very disappointing.

It is also very dull out of the tube. So dull that I can run my fingers or hand across the blade without fear of injury.

There is very slight up-and-down as well as side-to-side blade play present. The blade IS very slightly off center, but not so much that I consider it an issue.

Overall:

My initial impression is that this has the potential to be a top-notch buy if more attention was paid to detail, fit and finish. I paid $5.01 shy of $200 shipped ($194.99) from BladeHQ and just received it today. For the money, I am not impressed or willing to recommend it. It is a culmination of the small things (especially the poor grind) that hurts the potential of this little flipper.

I have not decided if I want to return it for a swap, refund or to the manufacturer for evaluation. Out of box fit and finish is extremely important to me on higher-end knives well north of $100 and I feel like this fails to meet even basic standards. Your opinion and mileage may vary.

I am very interested to hear from Brous if they (he/she/them) are present here.

Your not the first to issue a mixed review of the Brous Bionic. Based on your experience and comments from other folks whose opinions I trust, I think this is a brand I'm going to stay away from.

bld522:

This is why I try to post honest and unbiased reviews.

The market is flooded with many claims and promises of quality. I, like many others, am restricted to ordering my knives online and I do not posses an endless budget for my hobby.

I guess I have a unique view as a "former" G.I. : It either passes muster or it does not

I also just got one of the new ti-lights with the carpenter steel delivered yesterday and I am working on pictures and review. But let me give a hint away:

It. Blows. This. Away. Not a CS fanboy, used/carried their knives in the war (Iraq) in combat as disposable tools. $80 and Taiwan made and it blows this out of the water.

GI Jon, I have had the Brous Bionic 2.0 for a few months and love it. Mine is everything yours is not. I opted for the blue same as yours but with the non black blade. Mine locks up tight with NO lateral or up down play at all. The blade is centered. The fliping action is just as you describe. The blue finish on mine is consistent with no irregularities, blemishes or dings. The blade on mine is not razor sharp but was still reasonably sharp (I fixed that real quick) out of tube with a an acceptable balanced blade grind (not spectacular but okay) with the exception of around the sharpening notch where it looses some blade grind consistency. Overall, mine is nice and I like it with the few minor issues I mentioned. I think you got a lemon and I would return it to Blade HQ for an exchange or refund. Best of Luck

I just got one yesterday and it's a great example.
Brous did a good job addressing the issues of the Bionic 1.0 on the lock bar, engagement, spine gimping, flipper shape, etc. The 2.0 shows he has respect for the opinions of the community to change tooling for this model.
I've had positive experiences with Brous Blades and I'll stick with them.
You got a lemon, which unfortunately happens, and I'd send it directly to Brous for inspection/repair/replacement. I'm sure Jason would like to ensure your satisfaction and will go the extra mile and get a decent example in your pocket.

I did opt to return it to BHQ so I can re-appropriate the funds for future releases. Glad to hear your unit is good.

I am sure that he fixed whatever issues there were with the 1.0 because it feels very melded in the hand.

As commented to another poster, I opted to return it. $200 is a bit much for lemons.

I am sure that JB makes great blades but this example fails to inspire confidence. It seems this one was tossed together.

Maybe I got a Friday edition.

Either way, for the asking cost I would at least expect a fully sharpened blade which in the pictures clearly is not.

At least it is straighter, more congruent and sharper than Benchmade.

I, too, have a Bionic and I was also disappointed with it. $200 for D2 seemed a bit stiff, and mine doesn't flip for beans. I haven't taken it apart to stone down the burrs and other surface imperfections, but for this money I shouldn't have to. This isn't a $15 Chinese ripoff knife. Brous has (or had?) a fine reputation for building excellent flippers. I suppose we all screw up now and then because this isn't one of them.
