Buck 104 Compadre

have one. use it for yardwork tasks mainly. cutting vines, things of that nature. 5160 gets sharp easily. doesnt keep a great edge for long, but easy to get sharp again. very tough steel. dont really care for the red powder coat, but can live with it.

[I got mixed up, I have a 108, not a 104]
Have 2, one is a shelf queen and the other permanently resides on the mule for general clearing/cleanup tasks and fenceline duty. I now use it preferably over a small hatchet. Have been clearing a stand of trees and find it particularly useful for trunk cleanup before bucking. One swipe at anything smaller than my thumb does it. Even larger knobs only take a few chops. Swings much better than a hatchet. It sounds like my usage is similar to jbmonkey's but I have been impressed with the edge retention and have not yet resharpened.

OOPS!!!! Had my model numbers mixed up. I have and use the 108 Compadre Froe. I do not have a 104 Camp knife.
Sorry about that....

Just swapped out the sheath on mine with a military survival knife sheath which fits it perfectly. Add either a magnesium fire starter or a soft or medium Arkansas stone in the pouch to replace that carborundum issue one and it is a pretty handy set up.
Now if Buck would make this same knife in a flat grind!

That's been my experience with non-stainless steels as well. It loses that sharp edge quickly and morphs into a medium edge & holds that. I notice Buck's D2 holds it's edge better. Just me. DM

i have put the trigger , but the knife is on the way to me.
when i get the knife , will feedback here .

Yeah, old thread.
But this knife is too cool and deserves a living thread..... I just breathed some life into an old one.
104's,
I have a few of these.
I use them regularly.
The original red one lives in my golf cart.
I take it to the cemetery and clean up around head stones. It's useful around the yard.

The SK 104 is a sweet knife. Probably one of my favorites.
I take it every time I go camping or hunting.
It's a great camp knife.
The flat grind lends itself to food prep.....
The wife loves that knife.

I'd like to see Buck expand on this knife and offer USA versions of the Selkirk.....
Hey, more folks are enjoying the outdoors with the Covid thing..
