Buck 112 vs. Buck 55

What's up guys. I am in the market for either a buck 110 or a buck 55. I really can't decide which one to choose. I have carried a 110 for three years and want to try something new. This knife would be edc'd and would last a long time. I also like having the 110 sheath on me, so a sheath for the 112 and 55 is also something I would like to be informed on.

Mechanically the design is the same; they are both single blade lockbacks. The carry is totally different; the 55 is wonderfully flat, nice to carry while quite useful for everyday chores type pocketknife - even in dress slacks and in the office. The 112 is a sheath knife, shorter 110 - unless you don't mind a big bulge in your pocket it is not a pocketknife - it is useful for skinning game and heavy duty farm and construction chores type of knife. If it were me, and I already owned a Buck 110, I would choose the 55 of the two for the above mentioned reasons. You can get a sheath for any knife - from pocket slips to custom tooled belt sheaths. OH

Agree, the 112 is a outside pocket carry knife. As it has heft and bulk. Built like a tank. It's 3 1/8" blade will do a lot. Good for suburban travel, walking the dog and grocery store stops. It will handle most needs around the house and office. Both can be found with up grade steel. DM

The 55 is a small pocket knife. The 112, as just said, is a tank in strength, as well as weight. However, you might find a 112 Ecolite that is much lighter weight. I like both and am toying with the idea of having the custom shop make a 112 for me.

Thanks guys, I guess I will go with the Buck 55. Now all I have to deal with is Buck 55 vs. Case slimline trapper CV.

Compared to a 110 or even a 112, the 55 feels tiny. Although it's half as long as a 110 (hence the name), the thinner scales make it seem like a miniature model of the 110 and notably smaller than half-size. But because of that, it rides all but indetectably in your pocket.

See if you can go someplace where you can actually handle it.

Excellent counsel AreBeeBee.

These photos compare the 112 to the 55. Notice the terrific Buck tape measure in the shots. Thank you kindly for the gift ITE. Christmas visited me early, not too early, and I have a lot to be thankful for.

As you can see from the previous posts the 112 and 55 are distinctly different. I would just like to add that I purchased a 55 about a year ago and it has been my primary EDC since then. I still carry a 110 or 112 but find myself using them less with the 55 in my pocket. I even carry the 55 when wearing a suit. It is a great little knife and well worth the purchase price.

The differences between the 110/112 and the 55 are so marked (apart from general design and function) that you will carry and use them differently.

The 110 and 112 carry best in belt sheaths or roomy cargo pockets perhaps, while the 55 just slips out of sight into an ordinary pocket — and unless the clothing is snug, it won't visibly "print."

If you want most of the capability of the 112 in a pocket carryable package, consider the 500. The 112 feels much better in hand but the 500 is thin and easy to pocket carry.

If Buck would make a slimline version of the 112, I would buy it.

Oregon, thanks for the pics; they help a lot. And that tape measure is cool.

My pleasure. You are welcome. I've noticed a few extra 55s on the auction block lately. I like target rich environments when I am in the hunt.

That wooden tape is as new. It is the bomb and I would have been reluctant to part with it. Very kind of ITE. I love it. Have you ever seen a Chuck Buck buck (paper money used as an employee perk.)? I've only heard of their existence. They have Chuck Buck's face in the middle and look similar to real spending cash.
