Cabela's 'Christmas Catalog' arrived today. I noticed the 'Alaskan Guide' series of Buck knives - with neat S30V blade - and a new-to-me offering - a 113AG Skinner! Prices have gone up - I got my 192 & 110 AG's - both - for what the 113 goes for now. More recently, my 005 GYS and RWS, with it's CPM154 blade, Gen5's summed to less, too! As Dylan said, "The times they are a-changing!". Still - it intrigues me... I liked the knife - may have to eventually get one - on sale/with a big discount coupon, etc. Anyone have one?

Somebody here said they were getting one a while back.

I said I thought the price was crazy at $140 when the rubber handled Vanguard is $100.

I suggested getting instead a $40 113 with a handle blem and having one of our forum knife guys put some nice slabs and a nice polish on it for less money.

I guess it all depends on how highly you value the S30V over the 420HC.

Just got my catalog today and though I love the look of the 113AG that price is IMHO, just too much for what you're getting. Also really like the looks of the AG192 but again the price is just over the top though not as bad as the 113. If I could find a coupon I might be tempted to get that rubber handle 192.

I notice they've dropped that expensive S30V AG fillet knife from the line.

I never thought that knife was gonna be a winner either.

(Though it might be a winner 20 years from now when it's a rare collectible fillet knife--who knows?)

I couldn't find a bigger picture online but that's a really nice looking model.

A regular 113 is available via a website once known for books for $48+ inc s/h. Crazy site - I've even bought two lawn mowers and knives from them over the years. Evil-bay vendors have it for <$50 shipped, too. And... the Buck Knives site 40% off is good for a couple more days - that's $48 - add something to get it over $50 and get free s/h. That makes $90+ more - and s/h - a bit steep just for S30V.

I gave my friend at the local 'sharp things emporium', who had trouble getting the 113, my patched 'blem' 113 - he was happy. He had some 113's finally in stock last weekend when I visited - $80!

It was only a couple months or so ago that I got a Custom/Anvil marked 113 blem from a well-known Idaho seller for $40 and free shipping.

That particular bad idea is not in the AG lineup in the new catalog.

I'm in full agreement.

:D

I am thinking that the basic regular 113 for ~$50 with it's 420HC steel will suit me - I do have both the upgrade 192AG and a CPM 154 192 as well as my 'old' 420HC 192. It certainly takes an edge more easily than the other steels - from my experience with other S30V knives and my basic Spydie Sharpmaker. I found my 005GYS to be my grab over the upgrade for the same reason - the 420HC keeps a sharp edge well - and is easily 'brought back'. The AG line has gotten rather dear in cost. You can sure get a nice custom shop 110 for the same price as the 110AG - in S30V, too - no black/gold finish, however. Sadly, I thought the stag handled 110AGs weren't pretty enough when they were available... oops!

I guess it's 'value' for the money paid. That 113AG - with shipping - likely is a Happy Meal's cost less than I paid a month or two back for this knife from a familiar mail order vendor:

That's a current production Arno Bernard 'Wild Dog', 3.375" x .150" Boehler N690 steel full but tapered tang blade, pinned spalted maple scales, and cape buffalo sheath knife. Made in South Africa, it is a beauty - and a deal in that size/quality knife. No way to equate a 113AG - including the Happy Meal (... and two toys!) - as it's equal. 113AG? Not for me!

I think it's a great knife however I don't think I could justify that kind of price difference between 420HC and S30V, IMO it is a better blade steel but not that better.
