Buck 119 sheath question

I could be wrong but why does Walmart sell the 110 with a nylon sheath (which I personally like and I know our Walmart does this, BiMarts are leather) but everyone else gets the leather??
Also another question. I live in the Northwest which is wetter than some areas so I lean toward favoring non leather sheaths, (love Kydex) which can hold moisture more than others. Even with an excellent blade like the 110, steel can still rust if not cared for or is exposed to excessive amounts of moisture. Anyway, how do the rest of you lean, leather or other and why?

Older leather sheaths are better quality than the sheaths of today.

I'm thinkin' the sheath is one area where knife makers are trying to gain a few pennies of profit in tough times.

I like leather. You just have to remember to take care of your friends by separating them when you get back from some wet hunting and giving one a touch of oil and one a treatment with mink oil.

Leather sheaths were not meant to be storage containers for steel knives.

I'd rather spend the 2 minutes maintenance and use real leather.

That said, these days you may have to buy a custom sheath to get something that you can be proud of.

Just like every thing in life it's a trade off.The kydex sheath is going to dry out a whole lot faster than the leather if it gets wet.On the other hand a leather sheath if taken care of will repel water better than the kydex.Saddle soap, mink oil and other such products will help to keep a leather sheath from absorbing moisture and shoe polish will help seal it to repel water.I like a leather sheath myself but I live in a very dry climate.I think the reason I like the leather best is merely because I'm an old dog and that's what I'm used too. There are so many great sheaths out there for your 119 and knowing the guys on this forum like I do,the answer to your question is get both sheaths.
Welcome to the Buck forum Drover!:D:thumbup: P.S.Don't store your knife in the sheath.:)

If you want a kydex sheath, the materials are easily procured and that would be a good garage project for you this winter . Just keep in mind you'll have to deal with the rattle and some cleaning . I like leather and wear it under my rain gear . But I also like the cordura sheaths with the plastic insert . Those are safe . DM

The answer I got from BUCK when I asked about the nylon sheath on Wally World knives was they are cheaper thus lowering the price of the knife.

New guy here:)

But I did some re-search on the Buck 119's and found out that Buck did indeed save a few pennies by swithing to the nylon sheath. They are made in China, but the knife itself is still made in the US. The leather sheaths are still made in the US.

I like the leather, but the sheath of the 119 I got for Christmas smells like a shoeshine box in Matamoros (which ain't surprising as it was made in Mexico).

I got my 119 in 2005 and use it quite a bit...the synthetic sheath hasnt had an issue, if I got any fraying I just melted it a bit with a lighter (and the only fraying i got was at the tip of the sheath where it hits on stuff when hiking).

I was thinking of having a kydex molded sheath made or a high quality leather that covers the handle like the 102X next to it.

I prefer leather sheaths for the Buck 110 hands down. I guess I prefer leather sheaths for all style knives really. Love the way the leather ages with use. 'Old School' and thats what I like. -Gary

'Smells like the shoeshine box or boy in Matamoros'. Have you been there ? I have and it does . Just thought this sounded funny . DM ;)

In these tough times i'm sure Buck as a company has had to do what thety had to do in order to survive, and i'm sure sendind work to sa different country isn't something they wanted either, waddya do?LOL.The old style 110 sheaths had to be built right, they are still around todat after 40 sum years.

Them using import sheath pre-date the economic situation and by their million + 110 sales in a year period I'd say buck are doing quite well. Walmart knives they need to cut costs because they seem to keep most knives in the display case around the $30 - $60 range (not many are above that, maybe some of the AO's they stock).

So after getting my new 119 with the leather I really like it, pretty solid, drip hole, good snap etc. Glad I went with the leather instead of Wallys cheaper version, well worth the few extra bucks. (pun intended)

Yeah, I lived and worked in the Brownsville Texas area for 11 years and still make a few trips over the river now.

In the long ago past I've had a sheath or two made across the river but never liked the gun holsters as the leather always seemed a bit soft.

Me too . I used to visit many of the border towns in Mexico from Brownsville to Airzona .
To shop, buy meds, go out to eat, act like a tourist, ect.. But not any more !! DM
