Buck 119 - what steel

I like using this ^ 119 because of the belly on it. Plus the steel is 440C, which holds a good edge and responds well to sharpening on a SiC stone.
g123, I hope you're getting the information you wanted on this model. DM

Thanks for the advice. My use for the knife would be for camping as well as processing deer. Everything from food prep, splitting kindling, making tent pegs, ect.

It sound like S30V maybe on the brittle side so 5160 or 420HC would by the best choices?

I've had my 119 for almost thirty years and it's been my main hunting knife, of course in 420HC. I can field dress a deer without re-sharpening it, but by the end of the process, it does need to be sharpened if I had to go through some joints. The nice thing is, it is easily and quickly sharpened in the field. I'd get the good old 420HC.

If your planning to mallet with it, I would get an older model prior to 1981. Or Buck makes several models designed for that purpose. Just look through their on line catalog. DM
