I asked questiono n another forum and never got any answers. Would you say even though the grind is different that the Buck 124 Frontier is as strong as the ESSE 6? The 124 is said to be Bucks strongest fixed blade.

A very hard question to answer,

I have a 2012 LE 124 and I have a ESEE Izula II no ESEE 6, I will tell you that the ESEE has a great heat treat and they are great knives for the money. If you have a older 440C 124 that would be able to stand toe to toe with the ESEE.

What do you want the knife to do? even the newer 124 could do most tasks especially as a camp knife and Hunting knife. Last you may want to look at the Buck Punk or Hoodlum and a newer one sorry forgot the name in 5160 more in line for what you want.

I want to use it as a camp/hiking knife in the National Forest that is close by. I bought my 124LE this year so I'm sure it's 2012 stock and in 420Hc but with the Bos heat treat I would think it would be a stout knife. It was a hard choice between the Esse 6 and the 124 just as it was a hard choice between an Esse 4 the ENTEK Javalina I bought. Great knife in 440 c. that one should hold it's own against the ESSE 4

Rick, It's the Buck/Hood Thug that you were trying to remember. The length of it's blade and handle are near the same as Buck's 124. Yes, all of the Hood series knives are made using 5160 steel. DM

The 124 will serve you well but if you want to chop alot and batton large pieces of wood then I would look at the 5160 knives, 5160 is a very tough spring steel and is made to take shock. I have two of the M124 2012LE's and I hope one day to do a good field test but have not had the time.
