I'm looking at the Buck 301 and was wondering if anyone knows what the logo on the Buck 301 Stockman is a picture of?

94,

Are you talking about the blue 'shield' or the silver shield. 300Bucks

Blue Shield - Picture of Anvil ( Symbol from Bucks humble beginning as a one man hand made knife shop. )

Knife, bolt and hammer shield. Symbol of Buck's special tempering that made a edge you could hammer thru a bolt. Another symbol from Bucks past. Older Bucks with shields will have a more oval ended shield and newer shields are more rounded and the hammer handle is open on the end.

These are usually called scale or handle shields or escutcheon plates. Buck sometimes made/makes companies special order knives with their symbol or name on the shield. I that case it could be anything. Could you post a photo?

I guess I need to go look at a catalog as I appear behind the times. Someone else help him. 300

No, I was looking at the latest 301.

Now we're really confused. You need to clarify. Both shields 300Bucks showed you are used on current 301's.
Are you talking about something on the blade or on the handle? ......

Nope you answered the question I had. The picture was the shield on the knife I was looking at. I get the hammer and knife part, but what's the bolt or the piece between the hammer and the knife?

Back in the 1940's, Hoyt Buck would demonstrate how tough his blades were by cutting a bolt with a knife struck by a hammer. Al Buck, his son, designed the logo in later years. Someone correct me if I got this story wrong.

OK,

Here we go these older boxes will give you the idea of the symbol of the knife being driven thru a bolt by hitting it with a hammer. A long time Buck graphic symbol. One of the points Buck tried to be above other blades was the temper of their steel and it toughness. In Buck folders with these shields, older knives with heavy handling or pocket wear can wear a shield smooth and cut out some of the design..... 300

Apparently people thought cutting a bolt was something to try causing Buck to issue this warning in 1978....
