I just wanted to take a moment to share my appreciation for the model 309 Companion. I tried the Peanut for a while but I like the 3" sweet spot. I have since purchased 2 Buck model 309s in basic black and the rosewood. Seem to be a perfect fit for me. So I decided to scratch an itch for a vintage model from the "old" days. I fished out of the bay a rather inexpensive little Camillus manufactured 309. Paid a bit over $23.00 including shipping. Delivered in a couple of days and I must say, worth every penny to me. Came in a little on the rough side, small chip in the main blade and dull as a brick. No snap, and a small bit of rust on the back spring. But the blade is tight, no wobble so I soaked it in WD-40 and then a nice hot bath with some dish soap. I worked the blades back and forth and then dried the whole thing. Snap is BACK! Took a few minutes on a coarse stone, then a few licks on the medium. Finished off with a fine and I'm starting to build a fine edge. Going to take a little more time, but I'm carrying her in my watch pocket today. Not bad for a knife around 40 years old. I guess I paid extra for the pocket worn finish. I think original retail was around $10-or $12. Folks that don't know would just say, " that's just an ol' wore out knife." We all know different. There's a lot off use left in this "old" knife. I'm gonna use her.

Very nice! Good story to go with it. My very first "real" knife was a 309 at age 11 in 1972. Still carry it all the time. The old ones have charm. A lot more hand work went into them than today. Really like the long pull and the full flat grind.

I picked up a Brown Bone 309 about a month ago. I always thought that it would be too small for me. I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived and now it is my Dress knife.

I always thought that too. After carrying it around for several months though, it has kind of worked into my go-to pocket knife. My grail knife would be a 3 1/4" jack knife pattern like the Schrade 33OT. I like the 303 a lot but 2 blades in that size would be my idea of perfect.

J Buck,
I am right there with you on a Buck 3 1\4 Jack. Maybe with the New tooling Buck is putting in we will get our wish. I carried a 33OT for over 20 years. It was my first real American made knife.

309 was the first knife I ever bought (14yrs old now 60).. Got it new at an old archery shop with my paper route money.. Carried it all thru Jr/Sr High School and for many yrs after.. It is now retired.. Lots of fond memories.. John
