Passed by this nice slipjpoint for so many times. Till yesterday I couldn't help but took one home with me. For $22 CAD it has 3 440C blades, reasonablely strong for slipjoints, well-built, and wood handle slabs. Gonna be my EDC for this winter, for sure.

Didn't appreciate slipjoints till now. Though the 37_ series is a so-called "Wal-mart" edition. I do like it more than the "real" Buck version by its wood handles and 440C steels. How do you carry your slipjoints, btw? In sheaths anyone?

This is one sweet knife!

I bought one of those stockmen last November and for $20, it can't be beat! First thing I did when I got mine was to touch it up on the Sharpmaker and up to now, sharpness is very satisfactory even after moderate utility and whittling use. No complaints on the 440C!

As for carry, mine rides vertical position inside the watch pocket beside the Zippo.

I like the Chinese-made wood-scale Buck slipjoints more than the American-made plastic-scale ones.

My large-ish 371 Stockman cost the same as my small 2-blade 309, and the quality is the same. They are great bargains, IMO.

Tok - I think the stockmans and similar slip-joints are the original Swiss army knife only with fewer dodads.

I have a Browning stockman 4" rosewood 440C blades that I have kept around at work for at least 25 years. It works as good as new. Every now and then I give it a squirt of Breakfree CLP and clean the crud off the blades but I have never had any rust at all. I wonder who made these Brownings back in the 70's. It has good snap when opening and closing the blades. You do know what that little spey blade is for don't you?

I found a picture of mine but it looks sort of yellow for some reason. Mine is still very clean and shiny (thanks CLP).

I have one, and gave one as a XMASS gift this year, they are hard to beat for the money, and the 440C is a BIG plus to me!

Got bit by the slippie bug huh? It all changes for you now dude a very cool world has just opened up. Have fun!

Just trying out the camera i got for Christmas.

373

Just picked myself up a 373 at Wallyworld about an hour ago. I am absolutely stunned at the quality of this one for $18 Cdn!!! Walks and talks with the best of 'em. Time will tell about the heat treat/edgeholding.

Yobbos1, 371 is available at Le Baron in Markham, ON. Do you like the size of the 373 better? What are the blade lengths of the 373, btw? I think the 371 looks the best with the sheepfoot blade out, looks even better than the clip blade.

Clip blade is roughly 2 3/4", sheepsfoot 1 7/8,spey 1 3/4. A smaller Stockman is a good walkin' around knife for the weekend but I build fireplaces during the week and need something that can work harder so I go with a large stockman or an Opinel #7 or 8. As for carry, small/medium Stockman in right front with spare change and large goes in back right pocket standing up next to my wallet.

I have a nib Chinese 371 Stockman, from WM, in front of me. I can find no mention of the blade steel. Not on the knife, box or paper work.

What are you hanging your hat on to call it 440C? Thanks for the help. I suppose I will be able to tell when it comes time to sharpen but I would like to know definitively.

I've searched the Buck Forum, using "China" as the key word search, and found nothing to rely on in order to identify the blade steel.

Thank you kindly.

All the best,

It's under "Buck". Clear mention of 440c, and I've been seeing the blade steel mentioned all over the 'net.

Thank you.

I was hoping to find something from Buck itself. Over on the Buck forum there was talk that CJ Buck identified the blade steel on the Chinese 37X slipjoints as 440C but I could not locate this post.

I found your reference (bold added by me):

"In an attempt to keep them affordable, Buck is reproducing some of its classic slipjoint pocketknives in China. For example, the new model 371 Stockman (3.875 inches (98 mm) closed) with three blades of 440C is $28 versus the original made-in-the-USA 301 Stockman, which is $43 with 420HC blades. While the original has black plastic scales, these have Paca wood. Bolsters are still nickel silver with brass liners and the classic Hammer and Bolt Buck logo inlay. Also being produced is a mid-sized 373 Trio (3.25 inches – 83 mm) three blader ($24), a two bladed 375 Deuce (2.625 inches - 67 mm)($20) and a 3-inch (76 mm) single blade folder, the 379 Solo ($15). Buck is standing behind these knives with their "4-Ever Warranty" and insists they are being built to strict quality standards."

I looked at the Buck website, there wasn't any mention of the 371 model. I find it odd actually, because the Walmart models are not bad at all!

It's written on their packages, too. In the past I overlooked that for too many times that I thought it was the usual 420HC as well, till last week I actually read what's written on the package and finally known what a good deal I've been missing. :D

Just gave mine a Spyderco Sharpmaker's edge last night. Instantly know that this wood handled, 440C 371 is something I can keep for years to come.

The Last Confederate, from over yonder on the Buck Forum, was kind enough to dig this post up for me to confirm, from the horse's mouth, that the Buck Chinese slipjoints are indeed bladed using 440C. Thank you LC.

Excellent. Now, when people ask (most won't but I really like to know about my knives) I can tell them with authority.

Buck. The legend continues.

I don't care if they are Sebenza's selling at ten cents a dozen. China is one of the main enemies of the United States and if I have a choice I am not going to help them. I know lots of clothes and stuff come from there but if I have a choice I won't buy them.

Nolan Raborn,

Your inappropriate remarks have nothing to do with blade steel which happens to be the topic of this post.

I would take it as a favor if you would remove your remarks. Thank you.

If China is one of our main enemies, then why do we have so much trade with them?

I know lots of clothes and stuff come from there but if I have a choice I won't buy them.

I get so sick of these hypocritical statements, where was your computer made?

I know, people yell "I don't have any choice" yes you do, you could choose not to own a PC, or boycott and protest to get american makers to make them, if you can get enough people to demand them.

Fact is, you dont care unless it's going to have a direct effect on you, then you overlook chinese made products instead of doing without.

Sorry if this gets the thread sent to the political forum, but I am tired of people just trying to talk about some knives and there always has to be that one wingnut that starts whining about where they were made.

Same here, man. I'd like to talk more the knives themselves in here rather than where they were made. We have political forums for that.
