I apologize if this has already been asked, but here I go. A short time ago one of our local sporting good stores had a 30% off sale on all Buck knives. I couldn't help myself and bought a 55 that had a 2005 date and a 309 with a 2004 date stamp. The 55 seems like a real nice pocket knife. I cherry picked from the batch he had and got one with nice wood and a real sharp blade. I am wondering about the history of the 55. How long have they been made? Was there any different steels used? What type of handle material has been available? Any info is appreciated! Thanks!

The 55 came out in the summer of 2005. There are a few customs here and there to match the 111 that came out around the same time.

 ...You're one of the buyers who are starting up the "history" on the 55 along with a bunch of other forumites now. As psycho said it's just popped in here for 2005 and it's history is just beginning. I'm sure down the road we'll hear of all sorts of steels eventually being used on the 55. It's one that I have as one of my EDC's and one that I was happy to see appear...Hope you'll like yours as much as I like mine.:) ...

All this peer pressure,,,   I am going to have to suck it up and go buy one of those. :D

Here's my "matched pair" of 2005 Bucks. It just so happened that these two matched almost perfectly in the grain pattern and color in the scales.

If the 55 were offered by the custom shop, I'd have myself a pair with silver and ebony.

Very cool how close the grain is in apprerance.
Think I'll get a 112 and 55 to display with a 110. There's no way I could get two to match like you did and prob impossible to get all three so close. But I'd like to do it for grins.
You lucky buck :D

I looked through about ten 110s to find that one which had the nicest grain to the handle. I bought the 55 from New Graham, sight unseen, so the fact that it matches so closely is interesting. My other 2005 110 isn't even a close match to these two.

Psychopomp & DarrylS,
You stated they were built in 2005, yet I have seen similar knives to the 55 (in size and appearance) included in small survival kits sold in catalogs the past several years. I assumed they were copies of a Buck knife because the price of the whole kit was less than I thought the knife alone would sell for. I guess I just thought that Buck had made this size knife before. Interesting. Thanks again for the info!:)

puukko I know there are a wide assortment of 55's out there. Here are a few I know of. A regular one like you probably have , one marked 055, one with an Idaho cut out in the blade, an ironwood custom with nickel silver bolsters, a limited pearl and paua shell, one with the Idaho state stamp, a stag nickel silver bolsters given to displayers a Willmington, A 503 with a 55 blade. And the list goes on. Get your money out.

It is very simalar in size to the 503 but it has a clip blade where the 503 has a drop point.
Of course the 55 has brass bolsters and lining. It is very simular to the 503 in that it is quite thin and the same size.

I really like the 55. It is like a 'gentlemans' 110. I take the 55 when I wear dress pants. Probably wouldn't take it hunting though.:)
