I started playing around with my 650 and what a Beast of a blade! .234 inch thick...it took me two hours to put an edge on this beast and while working on it I kept thinking , what in the dickens am I going to use this thing for? I don't baton...not many zombies around lately...I haven't gone deep sea fishing since moving south.....so...what do you folks use this blade for?
Just wondering......

I don't have one, so I don't use one.

I do have 120s and they look good on the wall.

:)

I got my Nighthawk from my Stepfather, he said it was a hunting knife. Mine has such a wide edge that it isn't even sharp. If it were really sharp, I still wouldn't use it as a hunting knife, unless I was going Rambo style.
I keep it cause it's cool, and would be great for fighting(stabbing). Too dull for wood work, false swedge would tear up a baton, so it's just a stabber. I keep it with my other Zombie gear.

I have one I bought new probably 14 years ago, the first fixed blade I ever bought. I use mine for, well, cutting stuff. Watermelon, rope, small pieces of firewood, about anything

Yes, I can see it would make a decent rope cutter, once it has a proper edge...

 mine is like the one on the bottom left... It really is an impressive knife in hand and visually...
Thanx for the cool picture!

I currently use mine for looking at and holding coz it is just that darn nice a knife in the hand. I think you just convinced me to get another one though (or at least a variation on the theme).

Like MB said they look good in pictures.

I had a time figuring what those would be good for as well. Now, I know --- pictures. DM

I initially thought camp knife but the blade is too thick for proper food prep...though mine took a very sharp(shaves arm hair) edge...it seems thick enough for prying/digging...
LOTS of re-enforcement at the tip...is this model considered a Survival knife?...a combat knife?...

I would consider either of the terms to be accurate. I use mine when I go camping or hiking. I have two 650, one to save and one to use. This knife has a great feel in the hand and I think it would work just fine to prep food. To filet fish is a different subject. I wouldn't want to be the bear/ mountain lion that thinks I look like a quick snack.

When I was tracking the Nighthawk that I finally fished from the bay I read a review that started out saying he had heard the knife referred to as the "ultimate survival knife". His conclusion was that it may well be have the best balance, weight, steel, finish, grip etc, but it's not ultimately a 'survival' knife. He suggested that it was designed to do one thing very very well and that thing tended to be done by people wearing oddly patterned uniforms.

They also make great comparative pictures when, self searching, you ask yourself, "What was I thinking?"!

In my defense, the Gerber LMFII was a gift from #1 son. The KaBar is just traditional. The ESEE RC-5 is a moose. The Nighthawk... well... it was 'on sale'... a deal!

Looking at the 1995 catalog, it states that this was 425 stainless....interesting considering it was well after the switch to 420hc.....hmmm...

Sorry to hijack the thread... but what model is the largest one in the pics above, with the reeeeally long spear-point blade that reminds me of WW2 mine-clearing knives?

Edit: nevermind, a little flexing of my Google-Fu turned up the number 651. Now I know exactly how many sheep are going to jump over the fence tonight, as I'm trying to clear my head and fall asleep. :p

If I had one it'd be either a dirt knife (For dirty tasks only) or I'd put a scandi style edge on it and use the thing.
