i bought one yesterday at a discounted price because i was looking to lighten up my pack when camping. my only dissapointment was that i dont see USA anywhere on it, and quite frankly it is dull as it gets right out of the box. im sure ill have no problem touching it up with a stone, but i wanted to know, is this the way they were shipped? maybe for safety? it kinda suprised me because every Buck product ive bought through the years was razor sharp from the factory. i do like the synthetic material the handle is made up, im assuming it'll be very rugged. since it was a discount i got no box or paperwork. can anyone tell me what i got? i paid 22.95, and i feel pretty safe i did ok. anyway, if you know much about them, id appreciate a little help. thanks, Woody

If the box and paperwork aren't important to you, then you got a good deal. The list price in the catalog is $46 so you got it for half price. There are lots for sale around the $30 to $40 mark.

It's my understanding that they are made in Taiwan. As far as it being dull? I don't know, I've never owned or handled one.

thanks, im working on it right now, and its getting sharp real quick. does anyone know what the head of it was made of?

thanks yall a bunch. i had a hunch i got a good one. i been in the market for a new camp axe, and when i saw "Buck" i knew id found what i was looking for. and to think, i was leaning toward a gerber:o

I'm sure you can't go wrong with anything Buck makes. I did go to the tomahawk, ax and hatchet sub-forum and did a search. There was very, very little mention of the Buck there, so they don't seem to be all that popular with that crowd.

i did some research online, and got mixed results. all seem to agree they are durable, but some of them came razor sharp according to the new owner, and others seemed unsatisfied and referred to them as "dull as a butterknife".....im betting some just dont know how to sharpen a piece of steel:rolleyes:...thats not a problem for me, so im sure ill be o.k.

It's good that you can sharpen it yourself, but I think it's just not right to have to sharpen a new hatchet or knife before you can use them.

I quit buying Queen brand knives just for that very reason.

i consider it a small price to pay. i just put a new handle on an old Plumb head thats sharp enough to shave hair on your arm, but ive decided to retire the old girl since shes put her time in.( i bought it at an auction years ago, and it was probably 40 years old then) now i gotta start shopping for a new tent. i LOVE camping, and getting ready with new equipment is half the fun:D

You have bought an axe from Buck. Buck 757 camp axe .
It is good. My congratulations to you.
In Russia the culture of camp axe is set very up.
In woods of Russia very necessary tool is the axe, it is long-term tradition.
Khukuris and machetes are badly working in our woods
according to dense wood and thick trees.

thanks garryale, im happy with my purchase. i finished touching up the edge last night, and added a lanyard. i would just like to add that this little hatchet went from a dull club, to a RAZOR SHARP camp axe, and i have a bald stripe on my left arm to prove its shaving ability. i only wish i could have found a yellow one, but for the price im a happy camper:D(pun was intended)

I often try a sharpness of knifes too as shaving of hair on the left hand.
All knives fans in the world are similar each other in the habits.

I've had one for a while. Glad I got the Buck. How sharp does a hatchet really need to be? Mine came pretty sharp and after the first use the protective paint came off of the edge. Once the edge was bare it was much sharper but made no difference in chopping ability. Great little hatchet.

A "hair-popping" edge on a camp axe is probably not needed or wanted.

Depending on the steel, an edge that fine may be too easily damaged.

I've always sharpened axes and hatchets nice and sharp......but certainly not shaving sharp.

Some won't be able to have fun that way, though.

:)

I really like my 757 camp axe... ITE ... :)

I was in the market for a camp axe last month and passed on the Buck due to all the plastic. Let us know how the Buck holds up to use.

I ended up buying the US Made, Estwing E24A Sportsman Axe (sorry Buck). For me, I prefer the head and handle forged in one-piece, along with the stacked leather grip and leather sheath. Very easy on the eyes a well.
