buck alpha hunter fixed blade

I have one with the black handles and the gut hook. I like it fine it hasn't seen much use since its a specialized hunting knife. It carries well the sheath is pretty streamlined the steel is abit soft but not to bad. What were you goin to use it for?

I have one. Nice knife. Fits the hand well, sheaths nicely and has done the job for what little work I have given it. Mine came from the Buck Custom Shoppe, so I haven't worked it hard and have no opinion there, yet. But I see no reason why it wouldn't do a good job as a hunter.

It would be just for field dressing that's about it. I liked the alpha hunter mini. Cause I'm not to crazy over large blades for that. But the normal size would work fine also. I'm also debating what steel to get it in. And what's the best handle for it. Because I see there's so many to choose from.

I've got the mini also and used it through last hunting season. I have the Avid version with 420HC steel. Worked well and was easy to sharpen in the field. Since it was to be primarily used as a working knife, I got it with the charcoal dymondwood handles. They worked well and were easy to keep clean. The mini was, IMHO, a bit small for larger game. Great for small game. YMMV. :)

I'm also fond of the folding hunter that you see in the middle. I carried it with me last season and used it as well.

Can someone help me pick what steel to get and what is the best for getting wet. I see the Buck alpha hunter comes in different steel and prices are different .thank you

Bos is not the steel; it is the heat treating process.
From Buck’s web site: “Paul Bos, widely recognized as America's foremost heat treat authority for knife blades”.

The actual steel would be 420hc, S30V, or 12C27Mod Sandvik

I like S30V for better edge retention and it is a stronger steel than 420hc.
