according to Ritchie and Stewart 5th ed. 2007, the Buck Creek Indian Head stock knives werte made 1976-89 with the long pull extending almost to the tang were made in the "earliest runs". there were 2 sizes of Indian Head penny shield used. but what about knife #4 (bottom), same knife but with C. Risner over the 2 heads and Indianhead underneath ? thanks, roland

All well made knives. I guess I don't understand the question if there is one:confused:

question is: is the C. Risner knife a Buck Creek ? and if so how does it fit in time wise with the others ? using my various books i find no reference to C. Risner and have not seen any other Buck Creek knives with this stamping.
who or what is C. Risner and what other "brands" might his name be on ? roland

Clarence Risner is an old time knife collector and trader as well as the past president of the NKCA. If you do a google search, you'll find he has a website.

http://www.crisnercutlery.com/

Clarence Risner has been a life-long collector of cutlery and pocket knives in general. He used to be a President of the National Knife Collectors Association. Having been in business for over 30 years, he has become a dealer of Schatt and Morgan Knives, Queen Cutlery Co,, an importer of Jim Bowie Brand, and Eye Brand knives.

I did not know this information Roland. I just used Google.

That info is out of date. He is a past president of the NKCA.

I don't know what Clarence has to do with Buck Creek knives, but he owns the Indian Head stamp. The Indian Head knives that Clarence has had made come from the same factory that make the Eye Brand. He is a major importer of Eye Brand knives. I've heard that Smokie Mt. has leased the Indian Head stamp & is having some knives made in China.
He also has the Jim Bowie Brand, also made in the same factory as Eye Brand. Both the German Indian Head, Jim Bowie & the Eye Brand are well made user knives, high carbon, hammer forged steel.
Clarence has been a major player in the knife business for many years, it has been his livelyhood & his passion.
He has also done business with Queen for many years, having many SFO's. The Premier line from S&M all go through Clarence, he started it & approves every addition.
I have yet to see anyone beat his prices on a Queen product!

thanks all. v. interesting viewing on the crisner website. so my C. Risner Indianhead knife is not a Buck Creek but most likely made in Solingen (Solingen/Germany pile side tang, clip blade), commissioned by SMKW and stamped with the indian heads stamp leased from Mr. Risner ?
pile side clip (looks like stamp on Fight'nRooster posted today by sunburst)

another example of knife manufacture/markings being esoteric knowledge.

No, if it's stamped C.Risner from Solingen, Germany, it's NOT commissioned by SMKW. It was commissioned by Clarence. I'll check into it but I don't believe that C. Risner will be on the SMKW knives.

The C.Risner Indian Heads pre-date the Buck Creek and were not associated with SKNW. I remember when they changed in the late 80's or early 90's. The Owl Heads from the same period looked exactly like the the Indian Heads but I dont know if Clarence had anything to do with them.
