Buck Emblem Question?

Picking you gentlemans brains for a minute, does anyone know why Buck changed their emblem from the hammer and blade to just Buck, sorry I tried Google and came up with nothing. Thanks in advance guys.

This is my story, not Buck's story.

When Buck used 440C steel the Buck knives could be driven through a bolt and Buck used this image to sell the knife and create a legend.

Of course, it was never a good idea to try to duplicate the advertising image. Yes, it could be done. You had to do it just right with a fairly soft bolt (or ten-penny nail) or you could end up with a ruined blade.

As the years passed, bolts got harder and people got stupider and the steels were different and ......too many knives came back to Buck for blade replacement because too many people who didn't know what they were doing tried the trick.

Thus our beloved logo is no more.

Only the black sawcuts.

If your just refering to the 300 series, the marketing guys at the time thought it would be better from a branding standpoint to have BUCK on the shield instead of the traditional hammer/knife/bolt. We got so many complaints about the change that after a few years, we changed it back and still use the old logo on a lot of the 300 series.
Now if we could just bring back the logo of Hoyt at the anvil, all would be well again.

An example of needless abuse from the late '70s: I received a Buck 112 from my scoutmaster when I made Eagle. A troop tradition, receiving the 112 was quite a motivator.

One day, a buddy of mine borrowed it and gave it back to me about 10 minutes later, with deep hammer marks on the back of the blade, and the lock sprung/broke...the knife was completely ruined.

He said "Yeah, I gave it the Buck test, and it works!" I was stunned not only at the destruction of my knife, but his "not a big deal" attitude. He didn't use it on a nail, but a thick green sappling. I still can't believe he did something so stupid...and that I was stupid enough to loan my knife!

So I tapped out a letter on the family typewriter to the good people at Buck, explaining my plight, and mailed the knife away.

About a month later, I got a brand new 112 in the mail, with my original letter that included a big ink "frowny face" penned at the bottom by someone at the factory. I thought it was pretty eloquent, summed up the situation quite well. And very kind of the folks at Buck to replace the knife, given the circumstances.

Hi Liberando,

Thank you for your wonderful story. Did you know that Buck gives Eagle Scouts the gift of a Buck Duke 500 knife? If you send them proof of your Eagle Scout status they will still send you that knife today! Please send in your information and come back and post a photo of your Buck Eagle Scout Duke 500 knife, you earned it!

Looks like I was a little off, there is a cost, but not bad. See the copy below from an old thread.
"Yep...
Here's the scoop from Buck:

"Yes, we have a knife for Eagle Scouts. It is the Model 500 Duke. It is only used for Eagle Scouts unless it is a Limited Edition like the ones in this and last years catalog. The cost is $32.00 plus $2.48 for tax for a total of $34.48. Shipping and Engraving are included in that price. We engrave the Scout's name, the Eagle Scout emblem, their troop number and their Board of Review date."
Engraving is on the bolsters.

You will need to send in a copy of your Eagle Scout card or certificate with your order to Buck (along with a check for $34.48).
