I just saw the Buck Gen-5 Skinner with the Rosewood handle and wanna ask a few questions about it. Has anyone used this knife on deer and moose, how does it hold up in the bush?? I see that it has a 3" blade, is that too small for N Americas big game?? Thanks

The 2008 knives were out too late to be used on deer, well, here anyway!
I had the 2007 LE knife but didnt ever use it. I had every intention of using one of the 2008 knives though. Its a sweet little knife. I dont see any problems for whitetails!
Moose? Maybe, theres a gentleman one here that uses Buck 300 series slipjoints for big game so I dont think the Gen 5 is too small ;) Good luck! I think you'll like it!

Gen 5 is my new favorite buck fixed blade.I don't have the rosewood model, just a charcoal 420 hc version, but so far i would compare the edge retention to my custom buck 110 bg-42.........yep its that good !!I used mine on a roadkill whitetail and after i was finished ,I was more than impressed with it.Great little knife,I dunno if i'd tackle a moose with it ,but deer/bear no prob!

I don't have any experience with this knife but, a 3inch blade is more than sufficient for doing big game, including Moose and Elk...
My personal opinion is that a lot of people use knives that are way to big for the task.

They are neat... the 420HC is fine - and comes with a horizontal carry nylon sheath. I am not as fond of the 154CM's shath - the '07 LE has a better 'looking' sheath.

They are woods stompers here - I don't hunt nowadays. Great knives - fit the hand quite well - and decent woodcarvers, too.

Hey Stainz, why did you have to 'go there'? I had finally convinced myself that I have enough fixed-blade hunting knives, more than I'll ever need, then you post those photos of the Gen 5 Skinner! Oh well, guess I'm gonna hafta go track one down now. Who can resist such eye candy??

Yeah, the bad news is that the cheapo is perfect - I even like it's sheath. I really couldn't fault the 420HC steel. Then they released the rosewood/brass/154CM bladed one... yeah, more moola. Less than half the cheapest similar '07 Gen5 LE version, of course. Seriously, they both feel great - and are quite efficient as woods-walker knives - great whittlers. I'll bet they are fine for hunting/cleaning chores, although I'd probably get something heftier to pop a pelvis/hip-joint - or to chop timbers!
