I have a full sized Buck 189 Intrepid knife that has a NAVY SEALs logo on the blade. The story I was told upon receiving the knife was a group of Intrepid knives were sent to the SEALs for testing and a group of 50 were never destroyed or tested and that this is one of those knives.
I've contacted BUCK knives and they told me that they sent a group of the smaller sized Intrepids but they didn't have any records of sending the full size. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing???

I sure hope somebody knows the story behind these. Believe me, i tore the building apart looking for info but could find none!

I remember those Intrepids with the Navy Seals logo that were offered on EBay last year. The same dealer also offered the Goliath with the same logo. I checked out their website but I can't recall the name. I do remember, however, that they gave their location as one of the towns on Hwy 99 south of Sacremento in the San Joaquin valley. I want to say "Lodi" but am not absolutely sure. Also, IIRC, the name "Lisa" appeared as either the owner or manager.

Hey,
I dont know the truth of the rumor either, but IF Joe H. cant find the history of it I would be VERY LEARY!! I have seen the knife in question , or a similar one on Ebay currently. IT IS all to easy for someone to add a blade etching to a knife to increase value (in thier opinion)!! The one on ebay does not look like a BUCK Pro. job to me!!

Well, I was partly correct. Another one of these knifes is currently being offered on EBay, this one is a Goliath. It is Item 1089175517. The EBay seller's name is "lisa1000" and the website is for Fresno Firearms, Ltd.

...Hmmm...
I clicked the link, the item had ended but a similar one (identical) had been re-listed, clicked that one, same deal, etc up to 5 (?) "extremely rare, hard-to-find" identical items, one after another....
-"Things that make you say Hmmmmmmmmm..."

Joe I sent email to the seller of the Intrepid Navy SEAL Testing. Her reply was that they were done by Buck and she said the invoice number was 1152654,lets get to the bottom of this.

If Buck is anything like most other companies, you could probably get almost anything put on the blade if you buy enough of them and pay the price. That does not in and of itself mean that the SEALs, or anyone else in any way endorses the knife. While I have never handled one  , I am sure there are some military personel who buy them personally.
That's my take on it, and worth the paper it's written on...;)

Most definetely Buck made! While most special runs are easily tracked here at Buck, there is a way some special knives can be ordered and not "easily" traced. However, Buck DID make these knives in very limited quantities and they are available through the seller on Ebay. I am still trying to find out which models, and how many of each. Once i get this information, i will post it in another thread.

Hello Mr Houser. You seem to be the Buck authority here. I recently came into two Buck Intrepids, both large 12" knives blades with sheaths. They are the same knife but the grinds are as little different.
Both are Buck "Made in the USA" but one knife has smaller holes at the hilt/choil area than the other, also has a different edge on the top forward of blade and different screw heads holding the
grips on. One is allen headed & the other a standard screwdriver slot. Any information on these would be great as I'm trying to trade or sell one of them or both to a collector. Here's a picture:

Thank you for your time.

I know someone who would know this answer and I spoke to him he said he doesnt remember this knife ever used by the Teams. Still its a cool Knife that was a Kit Carson design. If this went to the SEAL's it would be used but still sharp as hell. Look at my front Cover . That BuckMaster knife was one of 6 that was tested(its all scratched but sharp) .Now with that said it doesnt mean some SEAL's ordered some and had the logo put on it but again not offical Team stuff more than likley. Also a rare style of knife from BUCK as it just has BUCK U.S.A. and no model #..

I know that the 187's had standard screws holding the grips on. If those were lost, it would be easily replaced and with all knives using allen headed screws it would make sense to use them as replacements. I have had a few dealings with e sellers and engravings/etchings that were suspect. I wouldn't drop allot of money betting on the fact that this knife was one of the few knives that were sent to the Navy for testing on the teams. Really, if you think about it, up until the beginning of Desert Storm the Navy Seals weren't even acknowledged as existing. I can still remember the news cameras with spotlights on the seals as they hit the beach. So not stealthy. My point is that in most of the special forces members don't want to carry anything that gives anymore information that is needed, ie name, SSN #/service #.

I talked to another collector today and found out that these are two different production runs of intrepids. He said the screws were right. I have no idea if these were used by navy seals but the lower one pictured was bought from an
ex navy instructor. Thanks for the info.

I just looked at the intrepids I have and the tanto blade has the allan screws and the chisel point has the standard screws. I never even noticed the difference before. I don't look at them much. I have them in my display but don't pay much attention to them. I like them and have had and sold many of them.

I just took a look at my chisel point Intrepid. It has an entirely different screw. The screws look more like a tamperproof (?) screw with two round holes for pins. I'm sure there is a real name for it.

that's so weird, that Buck would use three different types of screws for the same knife. It doesn't make much sense.

Hello friends.
I know the topic has been off for a long time, but I believe I can still add something for future research on Buck Intrepid.
I have two, one with slotted screws and the USMC logo on the blade, and the other with alen screws.
I asked about this USMC logo directly to Buck's customer service, and the answer was this:

'Hello Leandro.

The Intrepid in your photo was made by Buck Knives either in 1999 or 2000. The laser etching may or may not have been done at the factory. I do not have any record of this particular logo being used at the factory so it is quite possible that it was done aftermarket. There should be a date code on the blade that will tell you when it was made. "

Buck actually made a model that was intended for the Seals, limited to 205 knives. The model was called 187ns. There are no pictures of 187ns on the net. It is a very rare item.
Here are mine:
