Got this in a swap for a Cold stell mini pendelton. Hve no use for either but wanted something else to play with until I get bored.

Anyone got one, used one etc? Any good? Feels solid, and looks alright. Nice thick spine.

I wonder what the tang is like? Never been fond of plastic/rubebr handles. Not worth opening it uop until I know though.

Great knives, the new models are a tops collaboration, the only thing they changed from the old model that I know of was adding holes in the blade for whatever reason

I don't know what the tang looks like but I can tell you they are as tough as they come, I've only ever seen the tip break on one and that was under some pretty serious prying

It should serve finely. I've never heard a bad word about them over the years, they just came out too early to get a lot of internet love. Originally, they were brought out, and tested for the big SEAL knife contract that happened in the early 90's. I don't have a copy of those tests handy, but it preformed admirably, and they are still a popular private purchase knife with the military.

Rehandling shouldn't be a problem, I've seen few that were nicely done over the years, and they were rock solid.

I believe they actually passed the SEAL training, the only reason it wasn't issued is bc the SEALS found something "prettier" to them ;). I have a serrated version I got at a yard sale for 5 bucks brand new. Great buy :D

I have three or four Nighthawks, the most recent acquisition being the TOPS version. The only significant different is the sheath, which is the nylon style included with numerous other TOPS knives, and while it's not the best thing ever, it's sure a step or two up from the usual Buck style. I also have a Buck/TOPS CSAR-T, and it has both the TOPS sheath and "Rocky Mountain Tread" grips.

The serrations take up so much blade but I can't decide if I like that or loathe it

I had one years ago in the 90s and LOVED it. I even carried it concealed (LEO) a few times by simply folding the cheap stock sheath drop loop over and run the belt through it and letting the pouch part ride at top of belt level. Its complicated to explain but simple in practice. That's the ONLY good use of the cheap stock sheath...but I guess it works (barely!) I had that one for 3 or 4 years (?) I WOULD have carried it hiking but I had a Recon Scout with Eagle Sheath system (the RS was a gift from the wife or I wouldn't have carried that much knife hiking) and I always carried that, either dayhiking or overnighting. Had it not been for that, a Nighthawk would be a great larger "bushcrafting" or general outdoors knife. I think if I was a deployed soldier (was an 11B Infantryman years ago in the NCARNG) today I'd probably have a Nighthawk or Gerber LMF Infantry on my gear.

I sold or traded the original one, and have since bought a couple more. The NH is a GREAT design IMHO-it feels like an extension of the hand to me. No useless choil, straightline point, plenty of useful edge, etc.

I know what you mean about plastic and rubber knife handles (I think..it's like...they don't have "character":D ) but the ones I end up LIKING and actually USING and KEEPING likely have rubber or combo grips (Nighthawks, Mora Companion HDs, LMF Infantry II, etc.) and straightline blades and no choils. I am also wanting a Winkler II Operator with the horse trailer mat grips. Maybe this summer...

$5.00???? I HATE YOU! :grumpy:

No - I'm just JEALOUS! I don't care for the new ones (TOPS) and like the older ones. I was tickled to get one a year or two ago off a forum for $40!
