I have an old timer rubber handled skinner with the guthook that I have used for over 10 yrs and love it.

Of the 4 fixed blade bucks with guthooks (not incl. the one from china) Has anyone used regularly more than 2 of them, how do you like the feel?
Zipper
Alpha
Omni 12pt
Ergo hunter

Is there a 10pt w/ guthook?
Is the 10pt and 12 pt just a name or does it have any significance other than one is larger than the other?

The Omni 12pt appears to be very large, but havn't seen it next to the others, opinions?

I can't answer any of your questions, but I thought you might be interested in seeing the original "Zipper". Here's a picture of it and a link to the thread about them.

Thanks Dave,
Yes, I have seen the original zipper and read the story on it about Chuck (I think it was Chuck). Anyway I'm really amazed that it even made it to production, I mean would expect they go thru a bit of testing prior to production. It does look nicer being a little low profile but it's almost obvious that it wouldn't stay connected sot to speak.

I was hoping you had something you could find an excuse to post some pictures of.;)

I'd really like to see a pic of all 4 laying together. Better yet I'd love to fondle all four of'em together.:D

looked to see if there was a way to contact you, I have a '96 Zipper 691, if you are interested in picking one up, send me an email, I'll make you a deal.

This is probably the best model of the 4 listed st8yd. :D

With that said, I only use an Alpha folder w/guthook. But the vanguard "Zipper" is hard to beat!

Well all of a sudden like I have a handful of them.
I got the zipper, alpha, Ergo, and the BuckLite Max for Christmas and picked up the omni a couple months ago.

After fondeling them a bit here are my first impressions, even though I havn't got to use them yet.

How does it feel?
The BuckLite Max feels the most agile and practical, being able to rotate conveniently in hand.
The Alpha feels real good also and potentially as agile but the blade is deeper.
The Zipper is probably next.
The Ergo feels nice but starting on the bulky side, my hands aren't small, but probably average.
The Omni seems huge, very deep blade don't know the purpose.
Above is probably the overal order in which I will like them for usage unless a longer blade is needed then the Ergo would slide up to the top.

I am typically used to a skinning knife with a more upswept tip as most proffessional knives also are. Which the Lite, alpha and zipper are not quite so much but hopefully I'll get oppertunity to find out shortly.

I do typically prefer more of a traditional type knife but the rubber handles, I have found to be very practical. I have sure seen some pretty stag and wood handle zippers and alpha's that I'd love to have though. And the orange will be quickly spotted if dropped in the brush.

The blade looks really cool on the Ergo but I bet its a pain in the rear to sharpen.

The omni seems very bulky, deep blade and handle, and will probably shine under certain circumstances but don't think it will be the first one I pickup to use.

Thanks Dave,

I've always had reservations on the buck guthook as the point of the hook seems like it may be to pointy compared to others I've used.

Well, finally got to use a couple of them last wknd, my daughter shot a 164# boar. I skinned the head out and piddled around with both knives a bit, also helped another fella with his hog a little, I was itching to use the knife.

I had the Bucklite max and the alpha in the truck.
While my hands are not as callissed as they used to be, I found the jimping on the back of the alpha uncomfortable/to aggressive, so I will be rounding it a little. The broadness of the blade seemed a little more than necessary, but not a deal killer and would probably get used to it.

The I really liked the Bucklite max it felt real good in hand.
The factory edge on the max was much better than the alpha also.
As I had first thought, I think the guthook is a little to pointy.

Hopefully this is just the begining and I'll get to use them all, more than just a bit.

There are other gutting blades Buck made that work well. Such as those offered with the V52 Selector. DM
