Buck "Survival" Knife?

Took care of that. :)

How about the 822 Sentry? Looks like it would make a fine survival knife, if it didn't have the serrations. Does anyone have one of these and care to comment?

And just like that, the 124 takes a two vote lead. Speaking of the 124, I'm still impressed that the guard is soldered to the tang. Buck needs to advertise this feature. Not many production companies take this step. I had no idea until someone posted this photo.

Do you have more pictures of the tang? I never looked into a 124 much.

Here's my slightly modded Buck 119, it's a solid Survival knife. I straightened the clip for a stronger point and removed part of the guard to allow easier use.

I haven't been on this thread in awhile but that is cool.To me if the 119 didn't have the top part of the guard I would like it a lot more.

That straight clip 119 is the coolest knife I've seen in a while. How difficult was it to straighten, if you don't mind me asking?

May I ask if you used a dremmel or what to grind the top guard off? I really like that. It almost makes me want to buy a 119 just to experiment with.

I don't like hollow handles.....

I'll take that as a vote. ;)

Okay, this question is asked frequently on the forums, but I'm bored and this time, it is Buck specific. ;)

You know the drill...you're lost in the woods, mountains, jungle, desert (I'll even let you pick the location). Your gear consists of a firestarter, compass, stainless water bottle, and a tarp, but somehow magically, you get to choose one Buck knife (past or present model) for all your survival needs. Which knife would you choose and why? And of course, photos are always welcomed. :D

Only one knife?

No axe? Okay.

I don't get to use a Marlin 336C 30-30 rifle for woods/wilderness protection? Okay.

I am torn between two of my top favorite BUCK knives now.

So I will go with the BUCK 119 Special.

Why?

Because you only let me carry and use 1 Buck Knife in your post, it has a longer blade than my other Buck knives, I could use it in more ways, I am very comfortable in using it, handling it, and I have already started to open carry it more on a 'regular basis' in the woods/wilderness and around here now.

I still love my Ranger Skinner 113 knife and carry that in my fanny pack on a daily basis.

Added more: I have not been able to see and handle IN person a BUCK Frontiersman (124) knife in any of my stores here in town.

Cate, I had never seen a Buck 124 Frontiersman until I started hanging out on this Buck Forum several years ago - now I own two of them and the first one I had never handled until it arrived in the mail a couple of years ago. It is a big handful of a knife, a stoutly and beautifully built knife - take a chance - you won't be sorry. OH

Catherine,

The 119 is a great choice. There are a few differences between the 119 and 124 in that the 124 has a wider blade, thicker spine, stronger point, soldered guard, and it has a full tang - all features that would be advantageous to a survival knife. Below is a quick internet photo of the 120, 124, and 119 for comparison.

Sorry for the hijack for just a minute. But those look great. The more I see the 120 the more I drool over it.I love the sleek lines of it.

Picking my favorite Buck is like choosing my favorite child...........not fair!

As much as I'd love to vote for the 110 and claim that it is really ALL the knife I'd ever need for a realistic survival situation, I'm chickening out at the last minute and adding another vote to pile of Frontiersman votes. It's just got a lot more of everything, which creates an extra margin of safety (at least perceived) in my mind. So there it is, the Frontiersman is what I'd use when being dropped into the middle of nowhere.

I'd still try to sneak a 110 in my pocket too. ;)

Cate, I'm the only one that opted for a hatchet. If that's what you were inquiring about. DM
