Buck "Survival" Knife?

Though it's new and yet unproven, I think I would have to go with the 104 Camp knife if I have to choose a buck.

Actually, you chose a 104 Campadre Camp Knife, but you can switch to the Thug if you like. :)

There's another advantage that's being overlooked... The guard and pommel both have holes so you could conceivably lash it to a limb for a spear...

I don't see the guard and pommel holes as an advantage because I don't think it's a good idea to turn your only knife into a spear and risk loss or damage. It would be best to use the knife to produce a wooden spear.

But, if my options were a Buck or nothing, which the poll implies; I think it would be the Thug.

For survival, with only one tool choice I would have to have (in this order):
#1 carbon steel blade, not stainless. Bend, not break.
#2 3/16"-1/4" stock for confidence while batoning if need be
#3 a blade 6-8" long. Enough for chopping, but not too much for cleaning small game.
#4 flat ground blade so less binding when batoning or slicing.

BTW, this all makes sense.

Yeah... better go with the Thug. I think my 104 vote came before I handled one.

And you're right; if there's a limb long enough to use as a handle, sharpen it to a point and there you go!

Yeah... better go with the Thug. I think my 104 vote came before I handled one.

Bye, bye, Compadre Camp Knife! There's a new Thug in town. :D

Pokt, forget what I said. You need one of these instead. :)

Is that a lightbulb changer?

Seriously though... I considered picking one of those up for the pack. Don't weigh much and can stick fish, frogs, birds, apples, bears, and other food! Can even stick hot-dogs on it! You may have just convinced me...

Not that I foresee any problems, but please take video when you poke a bear with it the first time. :D

Too cool!

I choose the 124 even if this thread is dead. Have had a good time reading it from start to finish, and I have a 119 coming sometime this week, already have a 120 and a few 110's but in a survival scenario I want the 124.

Purchased a 124 online from Azon, but before it was shipped I found it like a 1/3rd cheaper at another central knife shop, but it is delayed by the manufacturer. I am anxious about this knife and that is not a good thing so I am trying to quell my obsession by reading the great knife stories here. It is kind of working, lol.

Ultimately I would never want to be caught with only one knife, but at minimum a 110 and a good larger fixed blade and I am good to go.

Welcome to the Buck Forum and BladeForums, skypeace. Glad you enjoyed this thread. So did I. No worries on resurrecting it. I went ahead and entered your vote for the 124. It's a great choice and well worth your wait. Feel free to post some photos of it in this thread or in a new thread when it arrives. Love to see it!

Well I’m late to the party and this thread was before I joined but after getting a 104 compadre frontier from skblades with the D2 ff grind and blasted burlap micarta handle and a really nice scout sheath it’s as nice of a outdoor survival knife as I need. I would have picked the 124 otherwise but the 104 is a nice size for many tasks. I would rather have more than one knife but rules are rules. Lol

Thanks for the welcome! Really enjoyed your organization of this thread and keeping the vote count straight even when you allowed changes. I know a nation that is presently in need of your tabulation skills, lol.

Well heck, if we're gonna fire up this thread again, I'm gonna have to re-read the rules. :D

Thanks sky, but my tabulation skills wouldn't come close to figuring out this election.

The weak point of the Mesa was the sheath, great design but made from poor materials. For the knife alone I'll give it a vote but I would rather have compadre axe all things considered .

Got it. Thanks!

Another (late) vote for the Buck 104 Frontier. Best all around knife I've ever had. Small enough that I bring it. Big enough to get a lot of jobs done.

Welcome to the Buck Forum, justsaymo! There's nothing wrong with that knife for survival. Good choice!
